Sequence Saturday - 73

by Scott Secco
bigquotesIt felt like a military operation was going down that morning in Queenstown, New Zealand. Cinematographer Darcy Wittenburg and I were prepping our gear in an A-star helicopter that was being flown by the legendary pilot Alfie, and it was well before dawn. Rene Wildhaber and Andrew Shandro had left before us on a morning ride and the goal in mind was to catch these two at the pass of Coronet Peak at sunrise and do some overhead reveals of how stunning the terrain and backdrops are in this area. It is quite surreal to be flying in a heli with the doors off and feet dangling out, anxiously awaiting visuals of the riders in position and seeing the sun crest over the distant peaks. When all these variables line up, and you see the NotBad grimaces on Darcy's face - mission accomplished! If you like the climbing looks of this sequence, wait till you see the descending in the trail segment of NotBad... - Sterling Lorence

That's the best way to see the sunrise in the morning, on the seat of your biking cruising down an awesome trail, in the middle of nowhere. Sick sequence.

Reminds me of a scene in Lord of the Rings when Legolas and Aragorn chase the Orks down the hill, only this time there are bikes instead of horses and a beautiful sunshine instead Sauron's eye... NotBad.

little known fact, New Jersey was the original location for this project but was scrapped in favor of New Zealand, the jury is still out on whether this was a good choice.

Reminds me the only condition I can imagine to be better than a human on a mountain bike would be a bird in the sky !

The other day I was riding down in a "tunnel" shaped into trees when a bird of prey took of and just appeared through the trees flying (pretty impressive) a meter away in front of me down this "tunnel", than he just went up as I had to stay on the ground...

Great sun, wheel of fire, hear me as I honor you on this, the shortest day of the year. Summer has gone, passed us by, the fields are dead and cold, all of earth sleeps in your absence. Even in the darkest times, you light the way for those who would need a beacon, of hope, of brightness, shining in the night.

So proud to be a mountainbiker, not football player or rollerskater!!! I love mountains and see the landscape in the middle of nowhere, with the best friends around me. So what is more, this is a really really good feeling, in addition I feel free during bike riding. that's the cult!
  • 1 0
Touching the sublime! Peaking the crest of the hill just as the sun is setting over the horizon at that exact moment... A perfect glimps into that feeling of merging with your surroundings you can sometimes get while mountain biking!
  • 2 1
What I just realized is that picture sequences just does not work for mountain biking. You can give a man a single picture and leave everything to his imagination or you can give him a great motion picture segment to put a smile on his face. But something in between like this sequences just does not work for me. I don't get myself inspired with this sequence no matter if it's shot in the most amazing place at the most amazing time.
  • 2 1
I agree dude , I find these sequences to be awkward and unemotional for me , I would rather have regular slow motion footage or just an over layed sequence shot.
  • 3 0
I was waiting for 10 or more photos in this sequence!!! It stopped halfway!

 "Let there be light..."

That first blinding, piercing ray of sunlight as you rise over a ridge is always the most powerful. At that moment, you know so many things. You know you're strong enough, capable enough, brave enough. You know the road ahead is gravy now, as though you've pulled the sun above the horizon with every pedal stroke. There's a sense of more than relief -- it's pure joy as the world around you comes alight. Many a morning have I been up before the sun, only to feel it gradually warm as the world awakens... There's a recognition in the early sunlight, as though the soul has earned the joy of basking.

Every aspiring rider trains hard, determined to conquer, until a sudden crash jerks him astray. Hitting the dust jerks tears, abruptly stifled at the call to man up, climb up, beat dusk. Eyes shut, ride after ride, as determined exhales dream up grander and more perilous trails. One day that dusk becomes the dawn peering over the peak ahead. And in that moment stifled tears may flow as the singletrack flows, tears of gratification wicked away by the hustle of the oncoming wind and the beating of the helicopter like a comrade in awe overhead. This sequence captures that journey impeccably - that mountain biking rewards with humility.

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.

Seeing footage like this makes me want to ride the world! There are so many stunning sunsets to ride against and cliffs to ride along. RIding my bike makes me feel free, like a bird. I love my bike and I love our planet!

-I can't do this, Sam. -I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were.

This is the perfect way to show what mountain biking is. It doesn't have to be big jumps or drops it can just be a ride with a buddy and a good view.
