I've bought a second hand radon slide carbon frame and was just about to install a new GXP BB , when I realised I wasn't sure what grease or paste to use as it has a carbon BB shell. I've heard nasty stories about grease affecting the carbon epoxy...
In this case, no grease is the way to go. Make sure both surfaces are free of any grit or grime, and carefully press the new bottom bracket in. There are varying theories on the subject of grease and carbon fiber, but the general consensus seems to be that some greases are acidic, which can degrade the resin and adversely affect the carbon fibers. This is a worst case scenario, and there are plenty of stories out there of riders who use grease regularly, but in this instance, I'd recommend not using any. You shouldn't need any carbon paste either – that's typically reserved for items like seatposts and handlebars that can slip if there's not enough friction to keep them securely clamped into place.
Thanks! , that makes sense especially as the existing BB came out a lot easier than the one from my old Alu frame. It's nice when the best solution is also the easiest ! :-)
If this is a pressfit 30 we are talking about here, putting them in dry has a good chance causing some creaks. You should be using the proper bearing retainer, and the appropriate bearing retainer prep. Basically it acts like a theadlocker, so that it will keep the bb from shifting around.
You definitely do not want cups shifting around in your carbon frame!
