April Fools 2019: More of the Industry's Jokes

Apr 1, 2019
by James Smurthwaite
In the past few years we've had self-navigating bikes, virtual reality helmets andupside down websites but what have the marketing minds of mtb been able to pull together for 2019? Take a look at some of the funniest below.

The Rise's Extendo Bar

the rise extendo

The Rise is proud to finally present its patented Extendo Handlebars. Giving you the ability to easily adapt to your environment, the Extendo handlebars makes it an effortless task to quickly transform your cockpit to your desired width in order to efficiently manoeuvre across any type of situation.

The patented Lateral sliding hydraulic system (LSHS) enables you to lock your handlebars in 3 different widths with a simple press of the thumb. Working in close collaboration with many World Class athletes to develop this technology, the Extendo gives you the ability to adapt to each section of a track depending on the amount of obstacles and varying speeds without compromising the handling of the bike nor its geometry. Wiggle's Aero, Carbon Spokey Dokeys

photo

A nostalgic piece of everyone's childhood that also improves performance, Wiggle could be on to something here.

Aerodynamic, made from carbon fibre and exclusively available at Wiggle, the adult friendly Spokey Dokeyswill actually enhance performance by making wheel spokes more streamlined. The growing range will also allow cyclists to express themselves in any way they choose, through the wheels on their bike.

With performance in mind, Wiggle worked with a number of internal cycling experts, industry specialists and external engineers to run the updated accessories through a rigorous research and development process, which included hour upon hour of wind tunnel testing at MIRA.

Wiggle trialled the Spokey Dokeys with several of its key customers and the results were astonishing, with 83 per cent of trialists recording an increase in their average speed.

Dani Rowe commented: “Cyclists across the UK now have another way to express their personality to other cyclists even while they’re desperately sucking in as much oxygen as possible on the most gruelling of climbs. What’s more, since using the ‘Carbon Pro’ Spokey Dokey I’ve gone faster for longer, it really is a must have.”

I remember when pikebike was a porn site for the day... Ah to be young and in love!

And don't forget when they turned to moto with "chainslayer.com"
  • 3 3
@sadfusde: I remember that one! That was quite a few years back and I lost my mind on that one.

I can't take credit for this but ......"Ah, April 1st: the only day of the year that people critically evaluate things they find on the internet before accepting them as true. Let's make April Fools every day!"

I really hope that commencal isn’t a joke
  • 13 3
bro its obviously a carbon wrap.
  • 5 0
They did carbon back in the day. On their XC. Yes. XC, and carbon, in the Commençal range. That was a gigantic fail.
  • 25 0
There are more than enough carbon options - keep on keepin on Commencal
  • 2 1
@viatch: nah the “welds” look smoother imo
  • 1 0
@vweb: Don't forget the Meta 5 carbon. They were all good.
  • 22 1
Couldn't be a prototype. Theres more than 10 pixels in the photo and you can actually make out that it has 2 wheels.
  • 4 1
Why? So the bikes are more fragile AND expensive?
The Commencal team clearly isn't handicapped by alloy frames.
  • 1 0
You can tell that it is photoshopped. It really isn't that hard to do. They just put highlights over the parts that would traditionally have welds and make it look smooth. Simple editing can go a long way.
  • 1 2
@speedingant: yes, forgot it ! Does the swinging arm broke like the aluminium one ?
  • 2 0
@vweb: Nah, I've never had a cracked Commencal..... except my Meta 666. And Meta 6. And Meta v4...

Thank you very much for sharing. That has made my morning.

I looked at this in my accounting class tonight and I couldn't stop laughing. So busted for looking at Pink Bike and not taking notes. I am sure the folks behind me were a bit shocked at what I was looking at.

This year's crop was a little lame - but that was funny!

Thank you for the link. Excellent indeed! Smile

Just a moment. Just a moment. I've just picked up a fault in the AE-35 unit. It's going to go 100% failure in 72 hours.
  • 4 1
At least its not the pedal-file...
  • 3 0
Yes, this is the best one today. Well, wait just a second, here comes another to the finish line! The Kuat hitch rack fork mount takes the win and top podium spot for the day!

Are u kidding me - y'all bitch about the price, clamp dia, the available widths and lack of damping and then want to upgrade to coil and bitch about the price again
  • 5 0
@Connerv6: No, you want the detracto bars.
  • 4 0
Too bad after the first extension you can't have any more, because the lever has stayed where you can't reach it!!
  • 2 0
 @Grmasterd: Someone's feelings hurt?
  • 1 0
 Install breakaway bars.
  • 20 2
Is the wavecel ad April fools too?
  • 4 1
It has to be... doesn't it?
tup
  • 4 0
I got an email from Trek doubling-down on their safety claims for their wavecel helmets...so maybe?
  • 17 0
I'd buy those spokey dokes if the money went to a charity and the were luminous pink and orange.
  • 17 2
To April Fools fans, I would quote Bill Hicks: I suggest you look around at the world in which we live and shut your f*ckin' mouth.
  • 1 0
Whenever I see that Johnny Depp advert I think of Bill. He would've loved it.
  • 2 0
@metaam: enlighten me. Haven't had a TV for about 15 years.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Google Sauvage ad if you really want to know. Don't say I didn't warn you.
  • 2 0
@metaam: "By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing…" that part?
  • 1 0
 @BenPea: Performers who sell products
  • 2 0
@metaam: Aye... Iggy Pop advertising for a mobile phone provider did it for me.
  • 2 0
@BenPea: Yep, they both deserve an evening with Goat Boy.
  • 1 0
Glad to know I'm not the only one who hates that ad. Seriously, what kind of person watches that and says "yes that is what I aspire to, I must buy that cologne..."??
  • 10 1
The handlebars are kind of interesting. I know its a joke right now, but the concept is intriguing.
  • 2 0
Seeing how the industry has a hard time building droppers without play, it would be terrible.
  • 4 1
Don't know what the 'HKT Podcast' is, and why LA coming on should make me laugh, and I also don't know who Ed Sheeran is. Now Jill Kintner doing a 'Heel Clicker', that was funny. I wanna see her do a Knack Knack now

@Dropthedebt: Thanks a bunch! Kind words... @YoKev we've found it kinda funny to start some podcast beef with Lance over the last few months. Nothing serous but just some friendly iTunes chart competition...

Will Lance actually appear on the podcast? Well......
  • 3 0
 Also, not Jill Kitner
  • 4 1
They didn't mention Ezra as an April Fools Joke, does that mean he really did join the staff? And we will get Doggo reporting and updates from now on?
  • 3 0
I saw a lot of this not even realizing what day it was, and thought to myself "Sure, sounds about right"
  • 3 0
With some additional mounting options, those Extenda Handlebars may bring more women into the sport...
  • 2 0
Kona may win, but only if the carbon fiber stride bikes are real . . .please tell me that no one saw a bunch of dentist toddlers and thought "untapped market segment"
  • 1 0
Let's be realistic gyus, the Rise's Extendo Bar should have a grip shift and not a thumb paddle because once it extends how can you reach back to the paddle with your thumb... Smile Smile Smile
  • 1 0
I dunno -- I'm waiting until they do a colorway update next year and I can get a kazoo in oilslick.

I'd ride that Knolly. Single speed compatible with that concentric pivot.
  • 1 0
With the shock angled like that, does that mean it's progressive?
  • 8 0

Extendo handlebars actually sound kind of dope - for a road bike
  • 1 1
The standards war is a joke, try replacing a part with a readily available option, Um no thanks-that will be a 10 week wait for your metric 59.99 part to come in.

And, aero spokey dokes are a thing. Get the here: nullwinds.com/pages/spoke-fins
  • 1 1
Don't think the commencal is april fools, there's no weld near the pivot closest to the chainring, no way a wrap could hide that.
  • 1 0
Show have had the new pro-flex DH bike with 8 inches of elastomeric sprung, friction dampes goodness!!
