Have you thought about your New Years' resolution yet? Why not make a healthy decision and get back into shape! When biking season is over, we wait for the snow for skiing and sign up for spin classes. OK, some of you brave the cold and hike back and forth to work on your bike each day, but for those of us without showers at work...what are the alternatives? How about a fun group atmosphere, no expensive gym memberships, no equipment other than our body's weight for lifting, and some innovative techniques to get you back into shape? Check out the Group Personal Training program I'm offering at the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary beginning this January!

What happened to our friends across the pond? What happened to our friends across the pond?
Many have been asking me what happened to our friends over at www.Descent-World.co.uk? The site has been down for the past few days because the server hosts had complained about the site being overly busy, they then decided to shut the server down to prevent excess load on it. So without any notice whatsoever the plug was pulled.

Since then they have had to move to a brand new server, which is now faster and bigger. Descent-World is now back in business – The DW team hope you haven't been inconvenienced too much by the downtime!

Back to regular programming

Get Sponsored For 2005 Get Sponsored For 2005
So Why is Sponsorship So Important?
To make it to the next level, it takes 100% dedication, hours of training each week, and great equipment. Dedication and training are free providing you have the time, but great equipment can come with a hefty price tag. What many riders don’t realize is that regardless of whether you are a sport rider or a top pro, there is support available from most of the biggest companies in the industry to help put more money in your wallet keeping you on the road to the biggest events.

Bored with Your Indoor Trainer Yet? Bored with Your Indoor Trainer Yet?
If you’re like most mountain bikers, you’ve hung up your bike for the season and broke out your indoor trainer. That’s nderstandable; the trails are snow covered, daylight is reduced to an eight-hour workday, and the temperatures are dropping faster than the resale value of your used bike. You’ve been training indoors regularly but, if you’re honest with yourself, you’re beginning to get bored with sitting in the basement with only your lungs and legs getting a workout. You miss the excitement of climbing hills, screaming down steep descents, carving hairpin turns, and negotiating the technical sections of the trails while getting a whole body workout. Why give that up when you don’t have to? All of the old reasons for not mountain biking year round have been shattered by technological advances in tires, clothing, and lighting systems.

West Virginia, B.C. Top 2004 IMBA Report Card West Virginia, B.C. Top 2004 IMBA Report Card
West Virginia received the highest grade in the 2004 edition of IMBA's annual survey of mountain biking. The Mountain State has everything a mountain biker could want: endless miles of backcountry singletrack, stunning Appalachian Mountain scenery and a community of avid riders. The West Virginia Mountain Biking Association has emerged as one of the top mountain bike advocacy groups in the nation, balancing trailwork, advocacy, riding and racing to appeal to a broad spectrum of cyclists. But what really sets West Virginia apart is the support of government agencies like the state tourism department and governor's office.

Deschamps Family Donation Drive Deschamps Family Donation Drive
On Tuesday November 30, Diane Marie Deschamps was killed while riding her bike home from work. Diane was a single-mother to 3 children. She was a nurse who cared for others. She was a cyclist and active athlete. She was a Calgarian. We now have 3 young people left with very uncertain futures. I do not know the Deschamps, but as a parent, a cyclist and a Calgarian, I am compelled to do what ever I can to help out this family in need.

Interviewed - Darcy Wittenburg Interviewed - Darcy Wittenburg
One of the best things about journalism is the license it gives those who practice it. Journalists, mountain bike or otherwise, rely on contacts. Basically we are free to call up whoever we want in the name of “journalism.” In fact, usually the more people we contact the better our story will be.

In this case I used my license to get in touch with Darcy Wittenburg, one of the creative minds behind the Collective. I wanted to get in touch with Darcy in September after a trip to Whistler, but he was on his honeymoon and traveling in Europe. After emailing back and forth for over a month I finally got to talk with him in November. I offer it to you, Mountain Bike Nation.

Broken hand after crash Broken hand after crash
If you love riding bikes and pushing some of your limits, it’s only a matter of time before your body ends up needing professional help. Whether it’s the last run of the day syndrome or the little lack of attention on the trail or stunt that you have ridden a 100 times, many of the riders young and old end up waiting in a hospital line. Injuries are a part of any sport but biking has more than it’s share. Here is a little story of my last hospital visit and some tips how to prevent such an accident and if you are unfortunate, how to get back riding faster.

New issue of Littermag: Indulge yourself… New issue of Littermag: Indulge yourself…
New Littermag is now ready for a taste test! Original plans was to release OLS#96 back in September, but the editorial committee decided to let it age a little longer, thus giving it time to mature and develop a better taste. This issue is absolute purity – produced under strict editing control, Litter has been aged to 46 links. Litter should be consumed slowly while enjoying the rich colors of its content. Side effects may occur for individuals living in colder climate areas - where winter is upon them and riding is restricted. Consume at your own risk!!
