Bike Supremists (Hurtin Albertans) Bike Supremists (Hurtin Albertans)
As 2006 starts winding down, I reflect back on some of the great road trips across BC. This was a tough year on the crew, lots of riding and lots of injuries this year, more than ever. We are a mixed hodgepodge of riders from Calgary, Kamloops, Nelson, Terrace, Winnipeg (yes I said the Peg) and Chilliwack. We started the season early and we were all pumped to be on the bikes, hitting all the same jumps and hoping to improve ten fold, kinda like we did last year. Except, we all broke something or a couple of things and as winter hits the injuries that were forgotten are starting to ache (yeah you youngsters, that's what happens when you are no longer a teenager).

I’d always been a fan of Avid’s mechanical brakes from trying them on loaner bikes, so I was really excited to bolt up Avid’s first generation hydraulic brake system in October 2005. After thirteen months of riding in all conditions between the soggy west coast of British Columbia and the high alpine of Alberta, the Avid Juicy Five brake system has proven to be a reliable, durable, and high performance component. After this much time with a set of stoppers I would like to share everything I have learned-the good and the bad:

In this installment of Fresh Meat we have a variety bag of goodies for you to look into. Speaking of bags, we've got the Hydrapak Borracho and the TSG Chicksands pack, both of which fit into the "everything and the kitchen sink" catagory. In the area of contact points we have Specialized Chunder tires to keep your bike on terra firma, while 5.10 High Impacts keep your feet planted on the pedals and if you're a lady that's killing it, you'll want to check out the Mace Women's Shackle glove to keep your hands on the bars. Axo also has the ruler short to keep your butt covered. We all know that winter is here so what better way to spend those quiet nights that you aren't night riding, then to cuddle up with your favorite bike and watch any one of the new DVDs that came out this fall.

Two years in the making, [L=http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1178600&f=14]Trek’s Session 10[/L] is designed as a “multi-use” downhill long travel bicycle: downhill race-worthy geometry and handling with ‘big mountain’ suspension capabilities. Countless days in the Park, run after run; World Cup level racing, heavy free-ride use, the Session 10 is meant to do it all with aplomb. Not quite the anorexic disposable “race bike”, definitely not an overly heavy, “hucking” machine, the Session 10 is a welcome “happy medium” in a market of highly specific long travel bicycles.

Here are the highlights and tribulations of a summer and fall of heavy use aboard a Manitou 8” TPC Travis/Revox equipped Trek Session 10.

Poor, hard on parts, need new cranks and not sure Poor, hard on parts, need new cranks and not sure how to install a set?
So what happens when your sick of riding around all year on twisted and bent cranks? Well for a lot of us… absolutely nothing! As we all know, crank sets can be a pretty expensive investment on your bike. Well myself, personally I’m 17 years old and work in a bike shop, so needless to say I don’t have the largest budget. There are inexpensive cranks out there, to accommodate those of us who can't bust out a hockey sock full of cash, but you might as well just keep riding your current setup because they will end up twisted or you will end up tearing the pedal out of them anyway. I have found that some manufacturers make cranks way to soft. If they are too soft, pedal threads tear even on the smallest impacts, and if you manage to catch your pedal on a solid root or rock, it’s game over.

Adventures in wonderland Adventures in wonderland
It’s been non-stop adventures these past months and I can guarantee many more to come. My last Pinkbike update was from early September when I was racing at the World Cup finals in Schladming Austria. That was one hell of a trip. I found that course to be the most fun out of any that I’ve raced. I definitely want to get back to Austria to ride. From there my amazing summer of fun was shattered into a million pieces. It was one simple email that brought me from Austria to the Artic. My two Revelstoke hombres Aaron and Andrew Clark(e) had made some shady plans with me weeks before over few beers. “Sure, ya it’s super fun, ah! We get to ride in choppers and swing an axe…” So I told the boys I was in. “Just email us when you’re coming home from Austria and we’ll set it up.” …Right on man!
