Bike Check: Vaea Verbeeck's Rocky Mountain Maiden

Jul 9, 2017
by Richard Cunningham

Pinkbike's Ross Bell spoke with Vaea Verbeeck in the Hope pits about her Rocky Mountain Maiden DH racer and how she sets it up for World Cup races. Verbeeck says that she has two primary sponsors: Hope Tech and Rocky Mountain, with the two race programs splitting travel and support. She is five foot, seven inches tall and weighs 150 pounds (170cm, 68kg), and prefers a large sized frame - the size she has ridden for three years, since the Maiden prototype she was given when she signed on with Rocky.

Verbeeck hails from British Columbia and says that park riding figures heavily into her riding regime. No surprise then, that she is a top contender in the Crankworx series. She rides off the back of the bike, and prefers a softer shock set up with a relatively stiff fork (both coils, with a 300-pound shock and a "firm" fork spring). Like many park rats, VerBeeck sets her rebound slower than most WC DH competitors - she says she likes it for smoothing out braking bumps. Compression? She'll add or subtract a few clicks depending upon the track or conditions. The Maiden has flip chips to adjust bottom bracket height and head angle - and as one might expect, it's as slack and as low as it can go (9.5mm BB drop and 63 degrees).

Verbeeck has a sharp mind and a lot of skills - and now that she seems to have broken the curse that sidelined her with injuries for three seasons, her journey to the top could be a short one.

bigquotesI tried the medium for two weeks last year, just for a crack. It was sweet in the bike park, but as far as race tracks go, I definitely love my large.

Lever position. "I do get a lot of arm pump, and I ride pretty far over the bike, so I like to keep them up, so I'm sitting back a little bit."
Vaea Verbeeck Bike Check
"I used to run them really far from the bars, but again, arm pump is a huge issue that I have on steep tracks, so I run them pretty close the bars now."

bigquotesFor Andorra, I put a dropped crown on my fork to raise the front just a little bit. And, I went back to neutral, the smaller crown, this week [in Lenzerheide] - just back to regular settings. Bike park setting!

 And the session looks like a scream so what's your point this is old...
  • 10 0
 @mhoshal: and the Scream looks like a Stab.

 @Niko182: ayy im with Niko

 @Niko182: ACKCHYUALLY....looks like a session

 I want tacos
  • 1 0
 @seraph: oh man I remember those! Wanted one so bad, ended up with a dudu
  • 1 0
 @seraph: I believe the scream was out before the stab. So technically the stab looks like the scream too
  • 1 0
 @mhoshal: I think the Stab came out in 1999, and the Scream 2001. iirc. Been a while but I remember them both. I also remember the first screams folding....
  • 1 0
 @atrokz: both brands were known for a lot of faulty frames that's for sure lol
  • 1 0
 @atrokz: Didn't the BBC Sideshow Bob come out a couple of years before the Scream? Then Banshee started producing them as the Scream? Just something that's stuck in my hazy memory somewhere...
  • 1 0
 @megaold: bowness bicycle company used to take bikes and mod em. They used to use the scream as well, so thats probably where you saw it. I think they sold exclusively through Bow cycle back in the day. Been a while but I remember them on NSMB.
  • 1 0
 @mhoshal: yea man. the stab looked awesome and beefy at the time but that swooping down tube was asking to be folded in, and low and behold, that's what happened to tons of them.
  • 1 0
 @atrokz: If i remember correctly, they were marketed as the Sideshow Bobs before Banshee even existed as a company. Bow Cycle hired them to make a beefy freeride bike that became the Sideshow Bob, then the Scream. I remember seeing the Sideshow Bobs at Bow cycle in 2000/2001 range.

 @megaold: ah interesting.

 You know your sizing is complete rubbish when your 5ft7 female racer picks the large.....
  • 12 3
 Idk mate I'm 6ft2 and rode the large and found it perfect for a bike park bike. I would say that yeah for racers they'd want a bigger bike but the Large was great for me (some guy)

 Unless you're old and like dildo length stems...rocky is over a decade behind in top tube lengths still.
  • 5 0
 But I use a 30mm...
  • 22 2
 Wtf why would you compare your stem length to a dildo?
  • 2 1
 yeah...that comment above!????
  • 14 1
 Just so you know, not all dildos are the same length... some are pretty tiny.
  • 5 0
 what size dildo
  • 15 1
 Lol I guess I'm on the newest stem standard Compact Hight Optimised Direction Equipment or C.H.O.D.E.
  • 11 0
 @Keystone08: I think its a poorly executed reference to MTB days of yore where 'long' stems were the fashion.. However, in my extensive field experience and independent testing, I have found most dildos to be longer than 110mm. As other fans have pointed out, XC dildos around that length can still be found in the modern era. Ned Overend, once used a 330mm stem in the late 80's. The moustache was just coincidence.
  • 1 1
 I prefer the fit of it I sit in the bike instead of hunched over on it.
  • 1 0
 @Keystone08:

Someone once asked me how you can tell if a stem is vintage or not, and I replied that if its long enough that you can use it as a good substitute for a dildo, then its vintage.
  • 2 0
 @cmcrawfo: No those are butt plugs dude....
  • 3 1
 As a fellow Maiden owner, I think that Rocky should offer that color to consumers. Every time I see Vaea killing it on the UCI DH WC, I wish I could have bought mine in that color!
  • 4 0
 That color is available, 2017 Maiden Park Model. www.bikes.com/en/bikes/maiden/2017?tid=74
  • 2 0
 @atrokz: You're right, good catch.
  • 1 0
 What color is it, exactly? Red? Orange?
  • 1 0
 I admire this racer girl same height as me (5'7) yet 30 pounds heavier and using a Large while i'm stuck at 120 pounds and feeling that a large is too big thus being kinda stuck on a Small frame. That is really cool. So the frame size depends more on preference than on actual height?
  • 5 1
 I love the lines on this bike. Specially the front triangle shape.
  • 5 1
 obtuse
  • 4 1
 you know your sick when you have a firm spring up front and a 300 pound spring on the back...talk about a balanced bike...
  • 3 0
 What is that yellow doohickey on the brake caliper?
  • 5 0
 Temperature sticker
  • 3 6
 @matthasard: so what's the benefit of a temp sticker?
  • 92 0
 @chinaboy: it tells you the temperature.
  • 20 0
 @cmcrawfo: lmao, I deserved that...
  • 1 0
 @chinaboy: they're used by Hope during race conditions to monitor the caliper temperature for a given rider and track. I figure this is part of on going product feedback which should assist them in producing a brake with improved cooling properties- for instance, their latest 6 pot that is currently in development has been shown to run cooler than the current flagship Hope DH brake the V4. I would think it will allow them to compare existing and forthcoming designs and product evolution.

 Looks like... ...a Session and a Kona had a baby.
  • 3 1
 hanging of the back all the time will give you arm pump. imho. pulling on the bars strectched out all the time is hard work
  • 14 0
 Yeah I think there was miscommunication. I ride quite forward* on the bike Smile thus why I keep my brakes levers not too low to keep me stood back a little bit. And also why I run a firm fork spring, I use every bit of its travel. As far as the 300 coil spring, the bike just works amazing when you sit in the travel a bit.
  • 1 0
 @vaea: what bar width do you run?
  • 5 0
 @bonfire: I believe these are 770
  • 1 0
 @vaea: Any Setup tips for a fellow Maiden owner? I'm trying to make my rear suspension work a bit better. It seems to get hung up on the holes. Thanks!
  • 1 1
 I ride a 45mm stem. I used to ride a 60mm stem on same bike. My friend calls my 45mm a "dildo". Says I should try a 30mm. Criminy! Pretty soon we will be in dirt bike stems (0mm)!!!

 The resemblance to Chingford skate legend and ramp builder Paul Wright is uncanny.
  • 2 1
 Rocky is a size behind the rest of the bike industry.
  • 2 1
 Omg that looks amazing Big Grin @theminsta
  • 1 0
 I Hope So ^^
  • 1 2
 Not sure why is she using rims which weights 650g each...any ideas?
  • 5 0
 She's sponsored by Hope.......... Maybe.....
  • 1 0
 @nojzilla: Really? xD Tech DHs are not the only Hope rims, and not sure, 68kg chick needs em. Lets Hope shw knows why Wink

 rad rock mount session.
  • 1 4
 Why do producers even make s and m sizes, if everyone ride l or xl nowadays?
  • 9 1
 For short people, dumbass.
  • 3 1
 S and M isn't for everyone, but it could be fun; if you're into that sort of thing.
  • 1 0
 @kjjohnson: Please don't say that, us short people get labelled enough as it is!
  • 2 5
 @stumpymidget: so that's how you're compensating, by being rude?
  • 2 1
 @karoliusz: I am not being rude, you are, by marginalizing short people. Short people shouldn't need to compensate, it's only because of Jackasses like you.
  • 1 2
 @stumpymidget: shouldn't need indeed.
  • 4 1
 @stumpymidget: TRIGGGGGERED!!!#!@!!!!
  • 3 1
 @karoliusz: What? That doesn't even make any sense. If you want to see why bike companies make high end small size frames, go to my profile and check out my Transition Suppressor. Thankfully awesome bike companies aren't half as short sighted as you ( Pun intended.)
