Finished: Ask Me Anything with Jack Moir

Jan 13, 2022
by James Smurthwaite

Jack Moir has had one hell of a year. Looking back two years ago, it seemed he might be without a race team entirely but he turned his fortune around and finished 2021 as the EWS overall series champion. Moir has battled hardship throughout his career and that was no different in 2021 as both bike and body breakages attempted to thwart his season. This year, Jack was able to shrug them off and because of his combination of speed and resilience, we crowned him our 2021 Athlete of the Year.

We thought it would be a perfect opportunity for you to ask him your questions, so we got him in for an Ask me Anything. Let him know what you want to know below:

Big gaps make a difference when the times are this tight. Jack Moir skipping stones and roots on his way to the finish sprint.
Jack Moir powering to the line to take his third win of the year and reclaiming the series lead from Richie Rude

Another race for Jack Moir locked in a battle with Richie Rude as the two have now flip flopped 1st and second at each of the first 4 rounds.
Jack Moir on his way to his first EWS podium.

How ‘Ask Us Anything' Works:

Starting at 1:00 AM PDT/9:00 AM GMT on January 13, 2022 you can type your questions for Jack Moir into the comment box below this article and he'll have a crack at answering them. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a few minutes while Jack works his way through questions that are popping up. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously.

To make this go as smoothly as possible, try to follow these guidelines:

• Keep your questions relevant
• Stay focused and to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later
• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words
• Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have an issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner
• Use propping to acknowledge good (or not so good) questions and bump them up or down to where they belong

Other time zones:
• 4:00 AM EST (New York)
• 9:00 AM GMT (London)
• 10:00 AM CET (Paris)
• 11:00 AM SAST (Cape Town)
• 8:00 PM AEST (Sydney, Australia)

Jack will be answering as @steveooo-superfan

Is there any truth in the rumours that you are 90% foreskin and only 10% shaft?
  • 36 2
Haha why has this only got 2 up votes!?
  • 1 0
What? this caught me off guard!

Cheers for the questions, I'm off to bed. Thanks everyone for all the love and support/following my racing last year! Let's do it again in 2022!
Shamless Youtube plug, Yo Yo Yo like and subscribe to Moi Moi Tv.

Please elaborate on your view of bike sizing and reach. For me as a taller guy it is really interesting to see you sizing down, going against the trend. Do you think current bikes are too long?
  • 29 5
He gets asked this question every time and I can tell you his answer already: When I was riding in Australia i preferred size XL, mainly because the tracks don't have as many tight sections as the racetracks in Europe and I know most of the trails. For the European races I prefer the smaller size, because only get to practice the tracks once. That means, that the speeds are lower and I need to change directions more often. Large just works better for me.
  • 32 1
Yeah Homie below got it spot on. I don't think current bikes are too long, just depends what I'm riding. I like a way longer downhill bike than I do enduro bike. I go into it a lot more in one of My Youtube video comparing the strive to Spectral! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lymyl1E4Ld0
  • 1 2
Yeah, i also find it crazy. I am often between sizes and always feel better on bigger bike. My theory is that maybe riding only for pleasure and fun he might chose bigger but if it is only for the clock he prefers that smaller for the switch backs. Of course still it is all very personal and that is just his choise.

Given that Australians love vowels and Canyon CLLCTV hates vowels: how do you make it work?
  • 21 0
 It's all about compromise
  • 7 3
 @littleskull99: cmprmise
  • 27 2
At the end of my first bowl of Jordans musesli, I always end up with leftover milk then have to add more muesli to finish that off, which ends up being on the dry side, so add a bit more milk which is leftover once the muesli is finished. The cycle continues until the box is empty. Am I doing it right?
  • 14 0
HAHA BRO, this is what I do every night before bed. Ask trackside Tommy if You don't believe Me
  • 28 4
This is fortuitous as I had just sent Jack a question on IG assuming it might not get answered. So here it is again...

It appears that in enduro super tacky compounds like Maxx Grip are often the norm. Do you crank up the psi to make them roll faster? Or are you just that fit it does not matter and run them in the low 20s.

Almost 50 yr old dad here going to do my first enduro and even though I'm probably going to come last, tyre pressure and tyre choice is something I have been thinking about. Would be nice to hear your take on this.

One could also ask why choose a DD casing over an EXO casing with an insert. And why there is a DualCompound version of the DHF DH 2ply tire.
  • 2 1
good Qns mate... I jumped into Enduro racing with my son last year for the first time. I raced in both the Haibike and the Southern Enduro series. I was propping up the back of the bunch with Southern and not quite at the back with Haibike Smile . However it has been a fantastic experience doing it and has massively improved my riding. Work on tech trails rather than fast flow. If you want to chat more, you're more than welcome to message me directly on here or you can also use my web forum at revtothelimit.co.uk/index.php
I love talking bikes, espeically Enduro.
  • 2 0
Im obviously not Jack, but I would go maxx grip on the front and maxx terra on the back, then run tyre inserts and lower pressures for ultimate grip and stability. As an weekend warrior, having a harder compound on the back will make the back last a lot longer and role a bit faster.
  • 21 0
Yooo, I just run normal pressure Mate. Haven't actually tested it but doubt the resistance is too much more on dirt with the softer compound. More beneficial changing tread pattern if You are after rolling speed.
  • 5 0
@cxfahrer: DH casing all the way baby
  • 1 0
It's always been said that casing (weight) and tread pattern have more of an effect on rolling that the compound. I suppose if you were comparing the same tyre, in the same casing, the harder compound would roll slightly faster. Never tested it myself, and I do go for a mid compound (Maxxis MaxxTerra, Schwalbe soft) rear tyre, and super soft front (Maxxgrip/ultra soft)
  • 7 0
@drjonnywonderboy: This is my thoughts, maxxgrip on the rear doesn't last long and tyres aren't cheap
  • 31 5
4 blade or 2 blade mower?
  • 5 3
And also Petrol or electric trimmer?
  • 45 0
 You mean Lawn Moir?
  • 3 0
@chamberlink: Push Moir or Riding Moir?
  • 19 0
Yeah 4 blade for sure. Just got some freshies actually.
  • 11 0
@Dicko22: Brooooo, Never thought I would be, but I'm all about the battery trimmers. I got 18V and 58v Aeg trimmers haha
  • 11 0
@mi-bike: Haha push, it's My EWS stage hiking training
  • 10 0
@chamberlink: Can we all just start calling Jack the Lawn Moir Man
  • 5 0
@derekbnorakim: And bring lawnmoirs to the race like chainsaws.
  • 29 7
The world is ending in 20 min and you have only two options to travel to see your significant other. Either your current race bike with Kenda tires down the gnarliest downhill or one of those reverse steering bikes down a crowded road. Which would you choose?
  • 68 0
Bruh both of these dangerous AF haha
  • 16 0
not a question more of a statement but:
thanks for screwing up your shoulder when you did it was perfect timing as i was doing sports med as a subject in pdh and was able to use your injury and surgery for my assessment and got super good marks Smile
  • 8 0
 me too mate haha
  • 17 1
When you got bthe Canyon deal I'm guessing you didn't have much negotiating power as you were without a ride. Two years on, have you been able to renegotiate your contract to something befitting your achievements?
  • 5 0
he definitely got moir money out of his contract
  • 39 0
Yeaeahhh, took a big pay cut, but grateful that I even had a ride that year. this is the last year on my contract, so can renegotiate this year.
  • 9 0
@steveooo-superfan: So what you are saying is despite your performance they haven't given you any more money?
  • 2 0
@steveooo-superfan: what do you reckon about riding with white socks on? I don’t rate it personally
  • 2 0
@melonhead1145: I know some racers have fairly low salaries but pretty big win/podium bonuses. Hoping he made out well, as there are only a handful of people in the EWS making decent money, and Jack deserves to be among them between the results and media he creates.
  • 2 0
@Mugen: any rider racing EWS or DH WC deserves to be paid, even if they aren't winning it's still exposure for the brand, people have go to live and bikes aren't cheap, surely they can afford to pay the racers properly
  • 2 0
@melonhead1145: I agree, but the facts are - based on the survey last year - it isn't the case in general, and more specifically it is public knowledge that canyon factory EWS podium contenders were paid peanuts just a few years ago.
  • 17 4
Hey Jack! I'm just going to assume you listen to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - if this is the case, do you have favourite album?
  • 5 6
Haha, funny, l listen only to KG&tLW.
  • 7 0
Yeah I do a bit, I don't have a favorite album, I like some of the more chilled songs like 'Work this time' and 'Catching smoke' when I'm parked up chillin, and the heavier ones for riding edits etc.
  • 3 0
makes me so happy to see them mentioned on pinkbike. sickest band
  • 13 2
Who (from a training / experience perspective) did you rely on the most to help you make the transition from a downhill athlete to that of an enduro racer? Training tips?
  • 1 0
Would to have a little more details here as well.
Jack was obviously very fit in 2021 - which was one of the key differences ghat separated Jack and Ritchie from the rest of the field.

From Moi Moi Tv he is obviously on a training plan - but some details about his coach and specifics about what this entails would be good.

Is Fabian a jack of all trades ? Manager / Coach / Athlete ? Or maybe - ‘always on the phone guy’ truly has a double life - sending coaching tips to all his athletes ;-)
  • 7 0
I did a few enduro races in the past so wasn't completely in the dark, but the whole team helped with the transfer!
Obviously the training was way different, so the team coach Alex helped with that a lot. And then Fab helped Me with the bike setup and the other riders on the team (ines and Party Boi) were a huge help at the races.
  • 20 0
@Killerfox: Yeah Canyon has a trainer (Alex) that trains us all. Basically just ride so much road that You hate riding road... haha
  • 17 4
Be honest the intense bike held you back
  • 62 1
Just in the last year, I had some good results on the Intense when the team was running the right set up
  • 28 0
@steveooo-superfan: i kenda know whet heppened
  • 11 0
To settle it once and for all, going straight to the source, just how tall are you really? In cm please not that pretend ft/in rubbish
  • 10 0
Despite what the internet says I'm not 7ft tall. I haven't had the tape out in years but I'm just over 6ft, high 180's in cm if I can remember correctly
  • 13 3
Do you spin 360's the opposite way depending on the hemisphere you are in similar to how toilets flush? Big Grin Keep shredding hard Jack!
  • 8 0
 Haha I can't do 360s Frown
  • 12 0
Who'd win a Moto, Jack Moir, Sam Hill or Dean Lucas?
  • 7 0
Definitely not Me haha. Maybe Sam, He looks like a demon on the moto. Donny goes good too!
  • 9 0
 Hi Jack,
How old were you when you first started riding seriously and what style did you do? ‍♂️
From Oliver (7 years old)
  • 11 1
As someone who must blow tires off of rims, are you pro or anti tire inserts?
  • 10 0
I don't blow tires off the rims ay (touch wood)
Dt and Maxxis the magic combo.... Nah I don't run inserts, but I have ridden with them before.
  • 9 0
What sort of support does the Australian Cycling body give an MTB athletes like yourself? What improvements could be made in this space?
  • 10 0
 moir money
  • 21 0
 What this Guy said ^
We don't get much support currently, but also don't really need it with a factory team. I had some good help from The Aus national team when I was coming up through Rando and Amiel, but was still a struggle financially and I couldn't really of done it without the help from Mum and Dad, but some kids are not so fortunate. Not really sure what the program is now, but I think helping juniors and privateers out a little more financially. Wynn Masters is killing it with his Privateer fund. We also need another solid national series to bring the Young Aussies up, there is no way I would of made it to this level without all the racing I got to do growing up.
  • 11 2
Who is steve-o riding for next year and what is your favorite flavor of McFlurry?
  • 4 0
He is the Mystery cllctv rider. It will be announced tomorrow. uhm I dunno, don't froth the mcflurries too much ay, maybe like m&m or oreo or somethin
  • 12 2
Who was phone guy always talking to?
  • 10 0
 Dude.... Noone knows.
  • 9 3
Metal Mondays is such an awesome concept. In the age of 50to01 BMX/skate style edits and then arguably overcooked 'FreeRide' edits with gratuitous slo-mo, B roll shots, drone footage being replaced with drag line footage, and awkwardly such dangerous features that riders are getting destroyed on them before finishing the edit...

Do you think there is a void of a niche that is hard hitting, fast paced shreddits? Not based on jumps/tricks or even worse... Thematic and purpose-built man-made features... Smile
  • 4 2
 You answered your own question
  • 4 0
Yeah just another style of edit. Depends what ya feeling at the time ay.
  • 6 1
I’ve ridden MTB for years and consider myself an above average trail rider/freerider but have only dabbled in racing here and there. I want to try racing enduro and/or DH more seriously this year. What things should a skilled rider but novice racer know/consider before jumping into a season of racing?
  • 17 0
Just ease into it. Don't try go ham first race and have a hugey. Have safe race runs and build Your speed and confidence up every race and You will naturally get faster.
  • 1 1
@steveooo-superfan: If only that was the case.. As i get faster it seems every other racer gets faster too ! The pace is incredibly hard when you're at the back !
  • 4 0
@weeksy59: homie the big differentiator in life is consistency. Not just consistent results, but consistent training / commitment / mindset / etc.

Very few people can keep their head down grinding for years and not skip a beat. Same in all sports and in business, really anything.

If you can outwork em, you’ll likely beat em.
  • 1 0
@steveooo-superfan: Thanks for the tip! I think that's great advice.
  • 11 4
Not a question, just a statement. You're a good cunt. Keep banging out the race wins keep being a GC. Authenticity never gets old.
  • 6 0
 Aww cheers bruvvaaa
  • 9 1
Are you planning to do some DH races this year ?
  • 16 0
Hmmm probably not. I had a bunch planned out last year, and just didn't end up doing them. Racing that much takes it out of You, especially when You're racing to try win. I was smoked, and so mentally drained just racing the EWS....
  • 6 0
Your 29er back wheel flexes like a bodybuilder in a mirror when we see the slomo vids, do you feel that and do you break wheels/blow tyres often? Steveo for PM
  • 24 0
HAHA. Nah I don't, and If I do I just belt the dogs back in with rocks. Long Live Steveooo the king
  • 5 0
What was your main reason for choosing the strive over the spectral, and next year will you look at switching it up, possibly even to a torque
  • 9 0
I just liked the numbers better for EWS racing. Hmmm yeah will be mixin it up on a different rig this year
  • 2 0
You can watch a full video on him comparing these two bikes on his youtube channel.
  • 3 0
Hey Jack, long-time Moi Moi Tv super fan. Just wanna say congrats on last year so crazy. Also just wondering if we will see an appearance from you at any world cups or world champs this year? Good luck with its year. yeeeew
  • 8 3
What's your biggest mountain biking superstition? Mine is if I put my armor on before checking tire pressure, I WILL get a flat.
  • 34 0
 LAST RUN
  • 3 0
@steveooo-superfan: never say last run, there's always at least one more@
  • 2 0
@steveooo-superfan: never say last run or you might not have the choice to do another
  • 1 0
 @steveooo-superfan:
2-1 runs to go!
  • 6 0
What is your one tip to corner like you?

When's Steveo gonna join you on the EWS circuit?

Best lawn advice?
  • 6 1
How did your limbs get so lanky and straw-like? were you put on a toffee stretcher as a child?
  • 12 0
 Rack off Steveooo
  • 8 1
 How is the shoulder?
  • 7 0
Getting there! Doing a bunch of physio, should be back on the mtb in a month!
  • 6 0
Thruster, quad, single, or twin? Right hand reef or left hand point?
  • 3 2
shark attack jack has left the chat
  • 2 0
 I love it all
  • 6 0
How was the battle with Richie Rude?
  • 14 0
 it was heeeeecctttiiicccccc
  • 3 0
@steveooo-superfan: would you guys avoid each other in the pits or was it pretty friendly? What's it like having your face on his punch bag?
  • 2 0
Considering when your career took off you have had many top Australian riders ahead of you in what was a really strong time. Which riders did you look up to coming through as a junior and did you get any help from them coming up?
  • 11 0
Me and My buddies looked up to all the Aussies (karver, Rennie, Bryn, Mick, Sam) But We all frothed Sam the most. We used to watch the specialised videos with Sam and Brendan flat out in class, so Brendog was another one of My favorites. Yeah they have all been super cool to Me over the years.
  • 6 0
I hope you get a much deserved payrise my man
  • 3 0
 Haha thanks My Man
  • 4 0
Jack, do you have the standard rubbish headset with plastic cups on your Canyon or do you have the privilege to use regular ones with alloy cups?
  • 2 0
Loved your videos last year, especially the pre-season training ones around Nice and Italy. It blows my mind how fast you go through some of the awkward switchbacks around Blausasc/Berres les Alpes, especially as a taller guy. Do you find party boy is faster through the switchbacks and you are making time everywhere else, or are you just as fast as much smaller riders?
  • 2 0
As a huge fan of Metal Mondays, and a huge metalhead mountain biker myself, gotta ask: your favorite five heavy metal albums of all time? Not necessarily in order.

Mine:
Iron Maiden: Seventh Son
Children of Bodom: Follow reaper
Opeth: Blackwater Park
Metallica: Master of Puppets
Wilderun: Veil of Imagination
  • 3 0
At first I thought you were listing fav songs not albums and I couldn’t believe you’d choose that maiden song as your fav haha.

Big ups for children of bodom. Many thousands of hours trying to learn that stuff on guitar in college. Good times.
  • 1 0
 @nvranka:
To be fair all of the ones I listed are technically also songs (with the exception of Veil).

Cheers man. Alexi was one of a kind; it's amazing how much jaw dropping virtuosity he could inject into songs that were still catchy and dripping with attitude. Their first couple albums are untouchable. I was gutted when we lost him last year
  • 1 0
@jgoldfield: holy f*ck bro, I had no idea. Haven’t followed that scene in forever. Wow.
  • 5 0
Do you wear a back protector when racing? If so, what brand and model?
  • 4 0
Yeah I run the TLD vest cause its super light and breathes nice. Think its called 3900 protective vest.
  • 5 1
Can you talk a little bit about what you're looking for when you pre-ride a track, and your race day strategy.
  • 5 0
It's impossible to remember the whole track, so basically just trying to remember key sections that can catch You out and cost you a lot of time if you stuff up.
  • 3 0
What’s it like having such an amazing rider in Steve-o to look up to and chase everyday? How much of your career would you credit to him? The bloke’s an absolute legend
  • 5 1
Any details on the changes the intense team during you time and how it impacted you as a racer?
  • 9 0
The team just ran parts that I wasn't comfortable with that last year I rode for them. I just couldn't be as fast on that setup as the previous years.
  • 7 4
G'day mate. I'm sure there were some stunned mullets over your amazing success. For the Q&A session: As a chill bloke, do you like a barbie in the arvo?
  • 3 0
Mattteee, You know I love a barby in the arvo
  • 4 3
Would/ have you ever consider riding a frame with custom geo/suspension kinematics specific to your aggressive riding style? Tweaks beyond the flipchips and anglesets. Along with the question of custom frame design also comes the idea of custom carbon fiber layups to minimize or maximize stiffness in certain areas as well as playing with things such as course specific geo/kinematics tuning. Do any of these factors ever come into play with you and your support team or are you not offered that option?
  • 42 0
Aww man sounds way too technical for Me. Give Me a horse and I'll make a few adjustments and swing off it haha
  • 6 2
What are some characteristics of your favorite trails? and most fun EWS track or venue to ride
  • 6 0
I like real natural trails, must have loam, roots, maybe a few rocks to spice things up. some fun jumps. Favorite EWS venues are the Italian ones, La Thuile, Canazei. Good size hills, steep, lots of loam!
  • 6 2
How many tyres do you go through over a race weekend?

Do you know what happens to the used tyres after?
  • 12 0
I go for freshies most days. Trackside Tommy wacks them on his bike and does max burnouts.
  • 1 0
I think from bike checks that you prefer a bike that is a bit on the smaller side, can you give a bit more detail on what you feel the smaller sizing allows you to do and what the compromises with this are if any? Speaking as someone with long arms who loves my XL bike Smile
  • 10 0
Yeah I only like the smaller trail bike because most EWS stages are pretty tight. I much prefer the big xl at home, feels way more comfortable, and it took a lot to get comfortable on the smaller bike but I think its faster through the tech.
  • 1 0
@steveooo-superfan: Cool thanks! Best of luck for 2022!
  • 3 0
Choice of fight between 1 Stevooooo sized drop bear or 100 drop bear sized Strevooooos?

Oh and can you do private coaching? I’ll clean the bugs off your Ute!
  • 1 0
MoïMoï! I was wondering what prompted you to shift your focus away from racing downhill to enduro? could you let us in on the thought process you followed, and how you're feeling now vs. when you were racing downhill?

Also, big fan of the vlogs!

Best of luck for next season!
  • 3 0
On your recent "best trail ever vid on YouTube" with party boi ..... Can you give us the location and trail name please dude?
  • 2 0
What bike you are going to ride next season? Are you going to keep the strive or maybe the new torque?

Thanks Jack, keep on going
  • 7 0
Ya gonna have to stay tuned to Moi Moi TV to find out. Like and subscribe
  • 3 0
Is Party Boi coming to OZ to meet and ride with Stevooo ?….that would be funny
  • 7 3
Mince & cheese or bacon & egg pie?
  • 2 1
Australia doesn't have the obsession with putting cheese in pies.
  • 5 0
@PhillipJ: What the hell is wrong with them?
  • 1 0
@PhillipJ: nah we have cheese and vegemite
  • 4 0
Bruh chesse and bacon My go too
  • 1 0
@PhillipJ: is that just a kiwi thing?
  • 2 0
@aer0: you can get a pie with cheese in it in Australia. It's hard to get a pie without cheese in it in NZ.
  • 4 0
Who’s your mechanic for this year with Tommy leaving ?
  • 1 0
So devoo trackside Tommys bailing, and not sure on the new mechanic yet....
  • 5 5
If you got stuck in New Zealand somehow and had to ride from top to bottom on a bike that was in a million individual pieces to start that you had to assemble yourself, would you rather have a 1997 Honda XR600 or a 1997 Specialized FSR?
  • 1 0
Haha I don't think I'd make it either way
  • 6 1
 Favorite metal band.
  • 1 0
 Better be brutal as hell.
  • 12 0
 Metallica
  • 2 1
 Would you rather ride:
- Flats with the grip of soap
or
-Clips that were impossible to get in and out of (I'm talking needing one of those track cycling zimmer frames and a coach to help you each time)
  • 9 0
I would commit to the death clips. I like me shins and shnuts too much for the soap feets.
  • 3 0
Lol how could anyone go with the slippery flaps
  • 3 0
@nvranka: there's a lot to be said for a pair of slippery flaps.
  • 3 1
Do you have any thoughts on chainstay length? What do you think of the idea of needing a longer chainstay on XL bikes to keep the front and rear center balanced?
  • 12 0
I haven't explored chain stay length much at all Man. Ask Neko He's a mad tweaker
  • 3 0
Which design is on your favourite pair of Knobby's?
  • 2 0
The squid print, or pizza ones!!
  • 2 0
Staggsy is a legend ! What do we need to do to get more Moi Moi Tv / Staggsy collabs ?
  • 4 0
Moiittttt, stay tuned. Exciting news for Moi Moi TV coming up, which means having staggsy around way more. Stay tuned!
  • 1 0
How’s the shoulder bud? Think it’ll be long till your thrashing down Awaba? Was hoping run into you when I saw Steve O there on Tuesday
  • 2 0

  • 2 0
What will you be racing next year and do you have any new sponsors for 2022?
  • 2 0

  • 11 0
My kona stinky that I just got for christmas!
  • 1 0
Do you think other pro riders could also be quick on your setup? Have any teammates tried?

Or is it particular to your style?
