Official Trailer: Paul Basagoitia's 'Any One of Us' Documentary Premieres Tonight on HBO

Oct 29, 2019
by Sarah Moore

Paul Basagoitia's 'Any One of Us' documentary will premiere tonight, Tuesday, October 29 at 9:00 pm ET on HBO. You can read the interview we did with Paul Basagoitia about the film earlier this year here.

bigquotesAny One of Us is a documentary chronicling pro mountain biker Paul Basagoitia’s life-changing journey to recovery after suffering a spinal cord injury.

Produced by Red Bull Films, the film offers a revealing look at the agonies of an unpredictable journey and an uncertain future after Basagoitia's tragic accident during the 2015 Red Bull Rampage. Viewers will also hear from a group of SCI survivors who shine a light on the struggles Basagoitia and all SCI patients battle every day, and the hope that inspires them to carry on.

Paul Basagoitia was born and raised in Minden, Nevada and developed a knack for riding bikes at an early age. He rode them without training wheels at the age of 2 and won BMX competitions by the time he turned seven.

Basagoitia’s talent was fully realized when he won the Crankworx mountain bike competition in Whistler, BC in 2004, where he pulled off a perfect backflip on a massive step up. He repeated this slopestyle win at Crankworx a year later, cementing his place at the top. Basagoitia went on to become the first person to complete a 720 on a mountain bike and landed the first double backflip on a natural terrain at the 2012 Red Bull Rampage event in Utah.

On October 16, 2015, Basagoitia returned to the Red Bull Rampage, where his future became unclear. One slight mistake during his run sent him tumbling down the face of a rock, resulting in a burst-fracture of his 12th vertebrae and a partially severed spinal cord.

While recovering from his paralysis, Basagoitia recorded personal videos that documents the struggles and triumphs he faced as he made his way from the hospital to rehab, and eventually back home.

This documentary was so good, I was able to find it relatable in many ways. Although my injuries I sustained mountain biking do not compare to Paul's. My injuries were severe enough that they required a new prosthetic hip many titanium parts and screws in my leg with multiple surgeries and over a year rehabilitation to learn how to walk again and also get back on my mountain bike. I very much appreciated how this documentary shed light on that accepting and dealing with serious physical injuries on a daily basis is very much mental as it is physical. I also appreciated how they showed the support system around Paul and what a difference a great support system can make in recovery and dealing with everyday life after such a life changing event. Kudos to Paul's fiance for sticking by his side throughout this entire ordeal. Unfortunately my girl couldn't handle it and she left me before I could fully heal. I am still not 100% healed yet and deal with physical and mental pain everyday. I want to say thank you to Paul and all the others for making this documentary. You have re-inspired me to never stop trying and to keep getting stronger every day mentally and physically. So Paul , if you ever happen to read this please know that although you may not think or feel it , you are a Hero in the truest sense.

I've never met him, but live in the same valley. He's been an inspiration to many here that's for sure. And we're still enjoying his trail work. Every now and then a kid will ask, or mention a zone around here and if they don't know who he is I always have a link ready to share. Looking forward to seeing the Movie! Thanks for everything Paul!

Super inspiring, thanks to everyone involved for sharing their stories. Also props to Craig Hospital, got to meet a bunch of the people that work there along with some of the people rehabbing there earlier this year. Amazing people, amazing place working to improve peoples lives.

loved this documentary. really showed the dark side and how tough it has to be for the people with these injuries to stay positive and not tap out. huge props to PB for allowing the cameras to roll during the low times and showing that kind of vulnerability especially being an athlete who is used to taking falls, rolling out of them, and be expected to get up and do it again. keep it going BAS!

on a side note, was really surprised not to see jessy nelson in this being that he was and still is a red bull athlete and making big moves in the SXS racing scene.

On a side note, did anyone see Stephen Murray's kids hit the mega ramp on the Nitro Circus tour? His older son nailed the same double back that took his Dad out. Pretty amazing to watch!
