 @mountaincross: but it's super boring.
If you can't always get out on your MtB buy a BMX not a road bike and work on skills. Ruaridh Cunningham's top tip. And he's not an amateur.

@mountaincross: my own period of 'off trail riding' for better trail riding refutes this statement. I became better at pedalling on a smoother surface. Pedalling on rough or technical terrain requires different demands of your body, different skills and the use of different muscle groups. I also lost muscle density in my upper body, arms and grip strength, no good for mtb. On the advice of a PT, I switched to power walking on some of my commutes, managed 40 minutes twice a week gym work on the rower, squats and weights for the upper body. It only took a few weeks to notice the positive difference on the trail. By all means ride a bike on the road, but the benefits for trail riding are limited, in my experience.

@Braindrain: Exactly and it's ridiculously dangerous. I mean, yeah I run into trees on the trail now and then but they don't run me over while texting...

@mtbgeartech: not to mention how unhealthy it is to exercise in a cloud of exhaust gasses. If you don’t ride in total countryside in hilly areas forcing intervals on you, then forget about it. And roadies often advise staying under 140BPM. It’s a ridiculous form of training for a time pressed amateur MTber. Getting on a BMX racing training regime is far more beneficial, and you’ll be a jump god afterwards. Sprint session takes 20 minutes, you do it twice a week and your performance on bike will improve greatly and definitively. On a road bike? Yeah you’ll become a king of fireroad climbs, that’s why we ride aye? Absolutely not to send jumps, smash corners and accelerate out of them. Ho wants that?

@WAKIdesigns: i like to do bunny hops over pot holes, or up sidewalks on my road bike, as well as riding it in some dirt roads or smooth single tracks.
but yeah , i agree with you on the pollution side, living on a "big" city you constantly inhale exhaust gases while riding, that's why i ride manly on streets that go out of the city or on the hill's where there isn't much traffic
i would love to train on a bmx track or pump track, but unfortunately there isn't any here, so road bike it is as i have to do 40 km each way to ride proper trails, and in the week that is like an hour each way, leaving only time for a road ride

@tiagomano: how tall can you bunnyhop on your MTB? Considering how the high seat is in the way of correct MTB bunnyhop form you can forget about any benefits roadie hops bring you. How about cones and hurdles on a parking lot and a bmx or dj bike? I am actually going to a department store to buy more cones. Have 16 and it is too few for a proper slalom track. And movement patterns trained there resemble almost exactly those on a mtb bike. And you get tired like hell... whole body workout

@scary1: Actually roadies were a pushing force behind the develope of stealth e-motors on race bikes
  • 7 0
@WAKIdesigns: Does this mean I should be worried?
  • 5 1
@WAKIdesigns: probably 50 cm. i run clipless pedals , but i can jump without them
i wasn't saying i do in on a road bike to train, more just for fun or to avoid something on the road, having said that, you should see the look on the face on a regular roadie when you pass him bunny hopping in to a sidewalk ramp
i some times ride my enduro bike in the city as well and do stair gaps, descend like 1 minute stair cases swerving to avoid tourists ahah

@angryasian: I will start with disc brakes, then proceed to electronic drive trains, single rings for road, 11-25 cassettes, sub 28c tyres, drop bars in general, powermeters, high cadences, low pulse training, 50yr old geometries, why no 32” wheels, jackets and vests without pockets in the front, ending on stupid hats and Rapha
  • 3 0
@WAKIdesigns: I’m confused about the low heart rate comment. Is that a thing? Have I been doing this wrong for all these years?
  • 2 2
@angryasian: I don’t know where you are on that. We all know that Peter Sagan is the probably the only elite roadie who is a true, real cyclist. Maybe Cav, Armstrong, Ulrich and Contador, no strangers to max pulse and getting it done, not relying on meticulously set tactics and watching power meter, not afraid to say what they think.

 @Braindrain:
benefits of training on the road to prepare for more fun mtb/trail riding:
*easier to control your heart rate for optimal cardiovascular/aerobic endurance training (trail riding in my area is too high intensity/anaerobic to develop a solid aerobic base of fitness).
*Aerobic cardio training on a smooth surface (road/dirt road) is easy on the body...a huge recovery advantage. High volume training without the physical punishment associated with aggressive trail riding or DH.
*long steady state cadence intervals which can be used to develop muscular endurance are achievable on most roads/dirt roads, but impossible to replicate on the amazing singletrack endemic to my region.
*all the best trail stashes withing striking distance of my house are 10+ miles from the door. I typically log 20-40 miles of road/gravel round trip with 5-10 miles of giddy trail ripping in between. Many of those rides have included 8+ laps of lift access park/enduro/dh trail shredding/jibbing how sick is that?

But let us not forget strength and skills training....

You don't need a road bike to benefit (cardiovascular) from road riding. I did 100% of my rides last summer on a legit mountain bike.
  • 7 0
Rarely do I feel a strong need to comment, but people saying that road cycling to augment off mountain bike time will have detrimental effects, or not help with mountain bike fitness seem like they’re commenting to just stir the pot.
Regardless of the bike you’re on it’s a case of you getting out of it what you put in. It doesn’t make any sense to bad mouth a different type of cycling.

  • 5 0
@Keit: well your opinion on what does it mean to be or not be a man is completely irrelevant if you do not have balls to present yourself. One click away from you, God knows how many miles and money to spend for me to race a butthurt bloke form an argument on the internet. I told you, all you need to do is to provide hraphic evidence how well do you ride and I will tell you whether you won or not. Mr Mysterious with plenty of reputation on the line. As If I wasn’t put down directly by folks who can ride in the past. They sat me down quickly and, effectively. And forgot about it immediately. But you carry a grudge you pussy
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: @Keit Don't wanna get involved in this spat, but can't help asking: wouldn't it be simple to settle this by posting both of your roots and rain results pages? It's usually clear who is faster by looking at race results. Unless you live within a couple hours drive of each other, doesn't seem practical to race head to head. Plus, whose trails would you race on? Unless neither of you have ridden them before, it wouldn't be fair. Just post your results and be done with this silliness.
  • 2 1
@fpmd: your solution is not going to work. My best position in a local race was 5th in "Elite". And I was far worse rider that I am today. My last race I finished like 50 something in amateur class, it was like 5th ride of that season for me and I didn't attend to the training so the taping was a surprise to me in several spots. So well, not really. It would have to be the exact same race.

I offered him, show me a vid of you and I tell you whether you lost or win directly. I know this is way over some people's heads but well, one can actually tell a lot by a few pictures... actually one may say most things by looking at someone's insta/ facebook profile. I can walk into a pub at the bottom of the trail center and tell you who can ride and who can't. Same when standing in the line to the lift. People who can ride better than average are confident, relaxed, usually have someone to talk to with them. You an even see it by the way they put on their gloves and helmet. A Joey is always looking around, checking other people's bikes, lots of eye contact, talking loudly about what he just did where, how close call he had, curiosity. Good rider is not curious anymore. Most good riders are strong, they have good posture. Their shoulders will always be behind the spine and chest will be forward. All fit people have it. I haven't even started talking about position on the bike while riding. If you hang off the bars, if you are too far back, you are a Joey... as to really good riders, just look into their eyes behind the goggles... those eyes are looking far away and are either dead or looking like they want to kill someone. Eyes on the prize. Browse through some pics of Hill, Peaty, Gwin, Minnaar, Myriam Nicole... then look at some Joeys, looking down, eyes on the rock, tree on the outside of the corner... Then shoulders follow, the hips. And hips don't lie. They steer the bike. Photo of someone in flight? a fat whip or tabletop - no questions asked. Dead sailor? you can see one from a mile.

Or Keit can just post a vid of him sending a 12m gap into a corner which he slashes and we are done here. It is just highly possible such vid does not exist. Because it is extremely, I mean EXTREMELY unlikely for a good rider to not have videos of himself riding. When you are good enough, people come and ask whether they can film you. If he was so good he would present his credentials directly instead of playing that dumb game.
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: These are good points. I guess if you're going to challenge someone to a race on the internet who you've never met, then you better be a true badass. And that will be obvious in a video of your riding... Time to take the kids to pump track. Cheers!

@fpmd: this came after me and may others criticizing his pro doping comments. Oct 19, 2017 at 3:41
WAKIdesigns says:

I like you, we are very similar, however just like me you fall short with your assumptions as soon as you elaborate them further. Data shortage. I just wanted to prove to you that you cannot hurt me more than I can hurt myself. Race me? Uneducated? Trumpian? Coward? Honestly? Do people actually get intimidated when you speak to them this way or you just haven't tried it in real life? You talk like a 16 year old looking for a fight. Do you know how many "discussions" like that I have had? What the hell do you think you're doing here? Trying to outsmart a fool in his own game? You can try to get on your high horse all you want. Many many tried, I am just typing sht online, I don't give a flying f*ck what people like you think of me, I am just entertaining myself. Maybe because I got more friends than enemies by putting a stick into an anthill... journos, engineers from bike companies, sales reps, mechanics and racers on WCup race. and I will care about you?

You took a wrong turn man.

Oh and no hard feelings... honestly, you're just another pissed off dude. I can understand that. Make this a better day for yourself and ignore me.

This is the basis of my challenge. And waki will not rise to it but rather insult and threaten. Why would anybody introduce themselves to such a... Person? Race is the answer
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: STOP twisting and lying yourself out of a hole you dug for yourself.
  • 2 2
 @Keit: I twist it? Again:

1. Nobody in their right mind would make a challenge based on internet argument.
2. Nobody in their right mind would accept a challenge over an internet argument:
a) especially from a stranger (You are a total stranger to me, total, I haven't even seen your name and face)
b) especially if it involves month salary worth of travel and weekend worth of time
3. Presenting yourself is a fundamental social skill.

Which part of these points you do not understand?

Sent you a PM I will now repost it every single time you open your mouth about that issue. And stop reposting a message which is nothing more than a proof that I reached out to you before YOU escalated the whole thing. You haven't even replied to this message. Every single thing you wrote above can be assigned to your behavior, the only difference being you talk like a boring pompous dork. Your lack of social skills and understanding of social context is evident and you have shown no credibility what so ever to race nor to call someone a coward. As to point 3. if you are so knighty - present yourself.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: Waki, you finally getting there. You need help. And I am sorry you earn so little. Best of Luck
  • 1 1
What do you base this assessment on?
1. I need help?
2. I earn little? If you live in Europe, the whole challenge will cost anywhere between 300 and 500€. That is what most people in better part of the Europe have left after they pay the bills and regular monthly expenses.

A few rules on setting up a challenge:

1. When challenge is put, both sides must specify the terms and agree on them. Both sides must be given enough time to prepare for the event.
2. You specified location to be Alps and as far as I can remember, any bike on any track. I am fine with any track but bicycles must be comparable and I refuse to race anything else than a bicycle comparable to either my Cabon Jack or my 26" DJ hardtail since these are the bicycles I own, ride and I refuse to purchase nor rent another bicycle. You have a Starling in your album which suits those criteria. The further details must be discussed in order to provide even field and test all aspects of riding prowess/ fitness.

3. My only term is for you to provide videos an photos of you riding to determine whether there is any point of performing the challenge. In case you are evidently slow/ unskilled OR evidently faster and more skilled , the challenge is entirely unnecessary. We may discuss the details in case our level is similar.

Regardless of agreeing on both terms further negotiations are necessary since I have personally limited time resources to devote for that event. Read: I have other sht to do than wiping arse and cleaning sht of people offended on the internet...

As a person who has mentioned the grandiosity of your own intellect over mine it is ironic that I have to school you on arrengement of the challenge. that you yourself have put in place. Simply put: I am cleaning your sht.

The only way for you to go forward with this is to agree on my term of presenting yourself and providing evidence of your riding prowess. Are you capable of understanding that?
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: @Keit If you guys are really gonna do this race challenge, may I suggest getting a neutral videographer to film it and make it a pinkbike article. Would be very entertaining. I'm also willing to bet after you guys meet and spend the day riding/racing, you may not hate each other so much. =)
  • 1 1
@fpmd: I don't hate him, I have no hard feelings. I am getting momentarily irritated. However judging by his way of expressing himself there is little chance we could have another bike date. I would not call him again. I don't remember when I held grudge... sorry Pole for their climate gate. And one dude I know who exploits people and shows striking work avoidance. He is impressive though. Really good at it.
  • 1 1
@fpmd: pro doping and sexist and he has insulted my wife repeatedly. Somewhat doubt it. Hence the race challenge. He represents everything many of us are opposed to. @waki you brought me into this comment section. Now eat up.
  • 2 0
@Keit: I never insulted you wife. Unless you mean that thing when I said she would find me hot. Because that is the only thing I said about her. And then you were stupid enough to go and ask her on opinion about our conversation, and come here and admit you did. Please bring forward the evidence. Pro doping? Not by a tiniest margin. Bring forward evidence. Not givin a sht about doping and not understanding why people do since the system is rigged? YES, YEEES! Sexist? - huh? By which measure? You can ask all 52 women at my office or Emily Batty about that.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: this is an extremely uninformed opinion.
  • 2 1
@craigcanucks: indeed. I thought about supporting it with scientific studies about women generally preferring lean muscular men over "not lean" non-muscular men but that would be sexist and that would be a generalization and I would lose the argument. So I didn't. I almost must state that it is not a joke in case someone finds it funny and ironic. There is nothing funny about wives. They deserve nothing less than utmost Respect. Nothing stops us though about being sexist towards men, like Keits legs are awful and not muscular at all.

Happy to see this, but annoyed to see the push for VeloClub membership over the past few weeks/months. I'm hoping that this doesn't blend over to Pinkbike and "premium" subscription based services, and addresses why CT was pushing this in the first place.

Wade you have done a great job building out the CT website, been following your stuff for a long time.

  • 19 0
@RONDAL: We've been pushing hard on the membership model recently at CT for sure, no question. But unlike a *subscription*, where you have no choice but to pay for access to certain content, the membership thing at CT is totally voluntary. There isn't a single piece of content on the site that's off-limits to non-members. The closest analogy I can think of is public radio. Everyone gets to listen for free, but some people choose to support it just because they want to.

Then I moved to the mountains where I had trails out the door and no bike paths and all I see are people looking at their phones while they drive. I do some gravel grinding, but that’s on my xc bike, because our dirt roads would generally crush most gravel grinders, or at least their pilots, and I can finish with singletrack back to the house after a long grinding climb.

@angryasian: yes! We just need Dave Tolnai on board and the transformation will be complete...
  • 50 4
What's that word mean? "Road?" I don't understand.
  • 19 1
That's the things the Romans used, and I think cars go on them
Much like a fireroad but without the "fire" bit

Next phase of the IMBA trail standards I believe...
  • 16 1
That smooth surface we drive our V8 4x4 trucks on that gets us most of the way to the shuttle trails.....duh

It’s the thing Roadies hold you up on when they are riding 3 abreast thinking they are in the peloton every weekend.

 "Hey Siri, define road biking"
"Road cycling is the most widespread form of cycling. It includes recreational, racing, and utility cycling. Road cyclists are generally expected to obey the same rules and laws as other vehicle drivers or riders and may also be vehicular cyclists."

I just spent 30 minutes trying to figure out my forum login from 2001. But I failed. So I made a new one. I'm the editor in chief of CyclingTips, I was on PB forever, I ride a Slash, and we're all gonna be friends.
  • 37 1
Don’t be fooled. Caley’s Slash has road clipless pedals on it, he wears Lycra, and his suspension is ALWAYS locked out.
  • 12 0
 @angryasian: You take that back.
  • 11 0
I have done a press camp with these two guys in Taiwan, I can confirm as roadies they pussy-ed out on the eating of the sea cucumber, but maintained beer drinking capabilities like mtb riders on the same camp. I can also confirm that they were very investigative journalistically and were part of the rebellion that caused us to have more access to factories and things we were touring. James was running around more than anyone I have seen with his camera, grabbing all the details that make the difference. I have no doubt their addition to the Pinkbike company fold is only a good thing! Well done guys.
  • 17 1
Hmm, I think an episode of Mike vs Mike vs Caley vs James needs to happen.
  • 4 0
Thanks guys, you run, by far, the best road cycling website. Love the podcast, the stories and all the coverage of pro cycling. PB and CT had already so much in common, hope this move helps you with the project.
  • 2 0
@angryasian: it's a win-win situation. You can now take some tips from the PB staff on how to legitimate the use of electric assistance on road bikes!
  • 23 2
So long as cars are driving on roads, I will not be recreationally cycling on said roads. Nor will I wear ballet shoes and moose knuckle trousers.
  • 8 0
Hopefully the smarter cars of the future will make it safer for cyclists.

 Aliexpress!

Dude picks up brand New AliExpress Oakleys, polarized prizm for 39.99$ standard tracked shipping included! They fall apart when he tries to take them off on first ride, writes a forum thread: Oakleys from AliExpress - broken, anybody with same experience? Noooooooo

@rugbyred Yeah, can't fit a 203mm rotor on that CX Frame.........and way too many water bottle mounts.
  • 15 1
Karl and Radek have already sent over a list of PB users, and you've all already been pre-emptively blocked. So no worries there Smile
  • 3 1
Here's a cycling ip for you...ride single track, not pavement. All kidding aside, welcome aboard!

This guys funny. Love it!

Pretty neat webpage, I was a former "road" cyclist, but damn you gotta pay monthly for a membership? Why can't it be free like Pinkbike??
  • 7 2
It's free to read everything, there is a soft paywall, but you can click "continue reading" and you'll have full access!
  • 1 0
Yep, membership is voluntary, and there isn't anything on the site that non-members don't get to see.
  • 10 6
Holy crap, two cycling websites I visit every day are now combined! Pinkbike has come a LONG way from the days when it was just a forum full of dweebs and "rate my bike" threads. Congrats!
  • 1 0
 Thanks!
  • 2 0
@wewallac: Yes, agreed! I love CyclingTips. Such high quality content and honest journalism.
  • 5 0
Dweebs? But you only just got here brah. Now the dweeb party can really start.
  • 1 1
@weebleswobbles: I'm talking about the early 2000's. Like I said, the site has come a long way and now it's awesome.

@willapajames: pinkbike is all growed up

I just shaved my legs, and ate a banana.

I just went over to Cycling Tips and the front page headline: "Enve Composites Sounds Alarm..." LOL.
  • 1 0
I just read that out of interest - guess what? It's not Enve that it's at fault but the tyres!

Apparently they're too soft...
  • 5 3
On behalf of CT VeloClub, I think we can all agree that:
- Bikes are awesome
- Carbon is awesome
- Titanium is magical
- Hops based sports drinks post ride are magical
- The most important rule when riding is ‘don’t be a dick’.

I think we’re all gonna get on just fine.
  • 6 0
Who's going to be the WAKIdesigns of their forum?
  • 5 0
 He'll probably pull double duty.
  • 5 3
If this means Pinkbike gets James Huang content then I’m all for it.

If this leads to Pinkbike polluting cycling tips, on the other hand, then no thanks.

Hopefully Pinkbike can learn a few things from their new acquisition.
  • 6 0
I think it’s safe to say that we both have things to learn from each other. That’s why I believe this arrangement is going to work so well for both of us.
  • 1 1
You mean PBcould learn user interface design?
  • 2 0
I just ducked over there and was drawn to the "adventure" square and ended up on this. I know it's a sponsored piece but they seem to have easily accessed info on how their sponsored stuff works. I really liked this article, presentation, and logistics follow up. Looking forward to this site combo going forward, nicely done to all involved.

I’m a regular reader of both cycling tips and pinkbike. Although I rarely spend time at cycling tips, just check headlines. Neal Rogers is unbearable, as soon as I see his byline I hit the back button. Fretz is tolerable, he’s improved. Huang is good.

Please let pinkbike influence cycling tips, not vice vests.
  • 5 0
Please do not adapt their actual website layout.
  • 1 2
I agree. But I do like how the CT website has a much cleaner colour scheme. pinkbike has way too much going on in my opinion
  • 1 1
I disagree. I think the best thing that couldn't happen is that CT web guys completely redo PBs frontend and dump the current one in the bin it should have gone in 20 years ago.
  • 1 0
@chriscowleyunix: the only thing i like about PB's layout over CT's is that the articles are listed chronologically. I find it easy to keep track of content I haven't read yet. Otherwise PB's is not attractive at all. It reminds me of a motocross team truck with way too many colours and logos everywhere
  • 5 1
Downvote me, I dont care but most road bikers I've run into.are real.conceited jerks
  • 9 0

It's a bummer that a lot of the users here could take something positive that grows the cycling community and try turn it into a negative. What @radek and @wewallac and co. have done with this merger is only going to benefit the overall cycling community. Just ride your damn bikes and be happy folks.

 pinkbike making movesss
  • 4 4
To all the road bike haters. They still pedal the same way all bikes do. Its almost racism it's 2019 no room for that. I ride dh and all mtn. But have been known to rent a road bike for fun and wear baggies lol. Congratulations to both sites content on both is amazing!!!
  • 2 3
How white are you to compare that to racism?

Cycling tips sold in the 7-8 figure range not so long ago - can’t have gone well to be sold again.
  • 2 0
Three years ago when BikeExchange acquired CyclingTips it was the best thing to do at the time. However, as the world moved on both businesses found their stride we all decided that neither of us were core to each other's business. This was the best thing for everyone and I have a lot to thank BE for.

If Pinkbike brings its self moderating comment section to CyclingTips, I'm in!

Get out and ride as much as you can on whatever you like. It's about the doing and not the being of some adolescent notion one has of a cool identity.

Is it just the tip or is the whole thing?
  • 2 1
That's great, just need a third site now dedicated to E-Bikes.
  • 1 0
Awesome! Dave Rome puts amazing articles together.
  • 3 0
Nah, that guy is a hack.

But seriously, I’m stoked with this news. After all, I own more MTBs than I do bikes with drop bars. Wink
  • 1 0
 @DaveRome: ha, nice.
  • 1 3
Admit it. You all want to become roadies anyway. Even the EWS is adopting Queens stages this year. Something they've taken from road races to make boring MTB races more exciting!
  • 2 0
 More spandex! Win win!
  • 1 0
Great...so now we'll only be able to read about "EXTREME CYCLING"
