RideWrap Launches Protection Film Made from Recycled Materials

May 6, 2024
by RideWrap HQ

We are excited to announce the launch of the world’s first bicycle-specific protection film made from 77% recycled materials with embedded superhydrophobic ceramic and self-healing properties.

Everyone that rides a bike does it for a reason and has a motivation that drives them. At RideWrap, we’re all riders too. We do what we do to preserve our playgrounds and do our part for the environment. We do it for you, so you can ride more and worry less. We do it for cycling!

Introducing RideWrap’s Lotus Pro™ 10 Protection Film. Our latest bicycle-specific protection film with embedded superhydrophobic ceramic and self-healing capabilities and the first paint protection film in the world made from 77% recycled materials.

RideWrap’s revolutionary Lotus Pro™ 10 film consists of 3 key layers, each designed specifically for bicycles:

photo
The superhydrophobic top layer is embedded with advanced ceramic technologies. Dirt particles are picked up by water droplets and repelled from the surface as if floating on a cushion of air.

Top Layer - Superhydrophobic TPU Topcoat:
Our Superhydrophobic top layer is embedded with advanced ceramic technologies making it extremely easy to clean. This layer also possesses self-healing properties which means light scuffs and marks will disappear with gentle heat - like the sun. Simply put, this layer keeps your bike looking better for longer. RideWrap Lotus Pro™ 10 film comes in either a matte or gloss finish which is determined by the topcoat layer. The matte finish of the new Lotus Pro™ 10 film is the best match to factory matte bicycle paints in the world. It has a lower gloss value (measured in gloss units “GU”) compared to other films allowing colours to look the smoothest and have the lowest level of sheen possible. RideWrap's gloss finish has a super high gloss value which exceeds other films on the market and adds extra pop and vibrancy to your bike’s paint finish.

Middle Layer - TPU Durability Structure:
With the launch of Lotus Pro™ 10 film, RideWrap brings the only true 10 mil thickness (1000th of an inch) film to market. By ‘true’ we mean it’s exactly that and isn’t a rounded-up value. This makes the new Lotus Pro™ film more durable without compromising ease of application. It’s been designed from the ground up to help better dissipate impact energy and is specifically crafted to shield against low-velocity, high-mass projectiles.

Base Layer - Acrylic Adhesive Layer:
Lotus Pro™ film’s adhesive layer works better with all bicycle paint systems. It has improved adhesion on rough, matte-painted surfaces and fits flawlessly around the tight radiuses and curves that are commonly found on bikes. Installation is easier than ever and will last longer. For extra reassurance, RideWrap’s Lotus Pro™ adhesive is designed to be gentle on bicycle paint and clear coats if it is removed.

Lotus Pro™ uses embedded ceramic technologies that mimic the self-cleaning properties of the lotus leaf. Due to the superhydrophobicity of Lotus Pro™ film, dirt particles are picked up by water droplets and repelled from the surface as if floating on a cushion of air. This allows them to roll off the surface easily, making it extremely easy to clean and keep your bike looking better for longer.

The Process

RideWrap has always used top-quality materials to craft our protection kits. Over time, we discovered specific characteristics we wanted in a film to create the best bike protection products possible. Despite searching extensively, we couldn't find the perfect solution, so we developed our own. In 2022, we introduced the world's first protection film designed specifically for bicycles, and ever since we’ve looked to innovate further and improve our technology and products.

During the R&D process, we focused on what sets our product apart from the typical films designed primarily for the automotive world. Automotive films are made to protect from a low-mass object impacting at high velocity. However, bicycles generally face the opposite scenario, a large mass object impacting at low velocities. The core challenge for the material is different.

So, at RideWrap we engineered a film specifically for bikes with enhanced impact and abrasion resistance, optimized thickness, exceptional clarity and finish, and superior adhesion with stain-resistant, self-healing and superhydrophobic properties, all backed by a 10-year guarantee against yellowing or cracking. We made it our mission to push the boundaries of technology by fine-tuning every layer of our film to improve and make it work even better. From the beginning we have been dedicated to levelling up and further differentiating RideWrap from the rest of the market.

Lotus Pro™ and the Sustainability Journey

As a company of riders who play outside, it was vital for us to push forward on our sustainability journey. We want to maximize our resources while minimizing our effect on the planet, and we’re excited that Lotus Pro™ film is now able to help play a key part. With the development of Lotus Pro™, RideWrap delivers a film to riders that is made from 77% landfill-diverted materials, a world first for the paint protection industry.

All RideWrap packaging is made from recycled materials and we’ve reduced our carbon footprint by setting up production hubs around the world to reduce distance travelled by high carbon-producing transport methods.

We’ve implemented waste reduction systems across all of our processes and we’ve partnered with the right organizations to give back to the environment. These milestones mark progress in RideWrap’s ongoing journey to craft a more sustainable product and reduce our impact on the environment.

@RideWrap: worthless. Can’t decide on if they’re a duck or a beaver. Provides nothing of value to the forest community.

Why do you print the blue camo pattern between the cut pieces? I’ve installed at least 8 of your kits and have to throw away the printed pieces when I could use them for the odd patch here and there without sending them to the landfill.

@stuie321: I'll take a stab at this one from afar with no affiliation with RW or deep trade knowledge, but I did think about how this might be done for about 30 seconds.

Step 1: Print the pattern on large swaths of material.
Step 2: Shoot lasers at the printed sheets to cut out the patterns for many different models of bike
Step 3: ship to consumer.

Masking out the pattern for every model and size of bike that they support, and *then* syncing that up with the lasers sounds like a major headache to me.

Those options on the roll seem pretty wide for unassisted bicycles. I'm using BikeShield for the very simple reason that it comes on a roll of 10cm wide which is perfect for my steel frame. Aluminum and carbon frames may need them to be a bit wider but 61cm seems more suited to those who prefer to (laser)cut their own pattern than for those who need to wrap regular tubed bicycle frames. Of course I'm in no hurry to replace my current wrap but should you ever consider to enter a different market (so outside that of the most popular frame designs), you could consider offering it in rolls as wide as the circumference of a typical bicycle frame tube. Should I ever need to refresh my frame protection and this is what you're offering by then, I'll definitely consider it as it seems like an amazing wrap otherwise!

I first got Ride Wrap when they were operating out of the kitchen in their place in Twin Lakes - my current bikes are both wrapped and I suspect my next will be too!

There was a really low light fixture where we installed and I think there are still bumps on some heads from it. Thanks for the longtime support!

I'm working on my Norco Sight wrap right now. Can you tell me how the piece that looks like Italy is supposed to wrap around and butt against the butterfly smoking a cigar? The other piece that looks like a laughing moon seems to overlap with the clarinet. I accidentally ripped one of the two reverse-J pieces. Can you replace it?
  • 5 0
Theres an infamous Chicken Wing piece from the V3 Bronson that is the things dreams are made of.

What other 'things' have people seen in their pieces?

In all seriousness though, we do have an awesome replacement piece program and you can find details here. The system allows you to choose individual pieces from the kit, prices them automatically, and gets them into production -and your hands- fast. Share the reason for the replacement piece in the system as our team reviews each order and often further subsidize them for things like dropping a piece on the initial install. (although if you drop a piece, you can easily fix it by gently pick it up and rinsing it under the tap until it feels clean and smooth).

I like the protection. But the ordering is real confusing. When you order the wrong product it has to be thrown away. You can not send it back. So much for recycling especially when it is extra manufactured.

When your wrap falls on the blue stuff on the wrapsheet it will take the color and from then on you have a blue wrap. Real disappointing.

I think there is no good installer or distributor in europe that does the job well. They want 400-500€ for installing the wrap what is way too much. So with 100-200€ for the wrap you are paying like 600€ for the whole fittment. Further the distributors and installers want to make the wrap and the cutting. If there is no cheating in using a lower quality wrap i don*t know why they persist on doing so.

As mentioned above all the hassle and not perfect fittment of the wrap. It is never so easy as stated on the website. When one side of headtube/upper frame fits the other will never fit. All in all you are on the winning side. Better a protection that does not fit perfectly than none. So it is eat or die with the wraps.

 Thanks for the feedback.

With over +300000 options on the site, it is very important to find your exact model when it comes to Tailored Protection kits. Our 'Find your Bike' page is set up as a waterfall to help find the precise model, our team aligns the models with the bike brands websites. The customer service team is available by email - just send a photo or link to your bike.

We do accept returns of new products for any reason, including mistakes in ordering. When our team receives them, they are put into the inventory and repurposed for another customer. Check out the return policy here.

All kits are designed to be DIY friendly, the new Lotus Pro 10 film aids for a smooth install with a further tweaked adhesive. We equate the designs to a puzzle, but with the slip solution, you are not locked in. We suggest to spray the solution then check and adjust fitment prior to squeegeeing, this way you can see that both sides of the piece (such as on the headtube), are lined up.
We do work with a ton of dealers worldwide, some use our Super Cutter software and films to service their customers, which they make a margin on, and they do have the freedom to charge what they choose for the service - as you would find with other service businesses.

If you are looking for support in your next purchase, please reach out to the team!

How good is the protection from rocks thrown from the front wheel into the downtube? Looking into something but it seems to me I would need better protection.
  • 6 0
All my bikes wrapped with ride wrap looked like new after peeling off the wrap. I live in socal some of my trails have a lot of loose slate and baby head rocks

Film selection is important and Lotus Pro 10 will 100% do the job for you. For 'spraying dirt and rocks' from tires, coverage is king and you wont get better coverage anywhere than our Tailored Protection kit with 95%.

i havent peeled the RideWrap off my bike since I put it on, but I dont notice any damage to the downtube film at all. Ive kicked plenty of rocks into my downtube. I expect it would look like new if I took the RideWrap off. I live and ride in Colorado where we have plenty of rocks. The only frame scratches I might have would be on the edges where Ive laid the bike down right on the edge of the RideWrap. Its not cheap, and its kind of annoying to put it on, but its totally worth it.

@RideWrap - do you have any sustainability data for this product ? What is the carbon footprint of your material recycling process vs using virgin materials ? Are you doing anything to divert plastic from entering the environment & creating microplastics down the line ? Can this product be recycled ? Do you have any fully sustainable materials in the pipeline ? is the removable backing sheet (which is discarded) plastic ?

dammit, my less good old ridewrap arrive in the mail last week.

Not to worry - yes, the launch is today, but the Lotus Pro 10 product has been rolled out to our production locations and shipped worldwide for a little bit now. We do this quietly so no one feels like they 'just missed it'.
  • 1 0
@RideWrap: just to clarify. Is it now the default material if I order a kit?
  • 4 0
@Wilm: Yes correct, every kit that we send out now uses Lotus Pro 10
  • 1 0
Just asking - is the Lotus film 77% made from recycled materials, or the complete product?
  • 9 0
77% of the materials (by volume and weight) that are used to produce the protection film have been rerouted from their expected destination of the landfill.
  • 1 0
Nice to see more use of recycled material. Is the wrap itself recyclable though?
  • 8 0
Local recycling programs are definitely a challenge. They are not standardized, in general quite inefficient, government funded, and heavily rely on proper sorting. So when it comes to plastics, most programs are geared towards PE (polyethylene) products, such as plastic bottles, in order to maximize impact and hit break even in order to keep them going.

We have considered (past and ongoing) our own recycling program, but it is vital when considering environmental impact to look at the entire vertical. Yes - a positive for someone to be able to send the product back after use for recycling, but No - a negative as the impact from transport is very high.

As a team and a business it is important for us to consider sustainability as a journey - a series of small steps in a never ending staircase. If we think only of reaching an idealistic result, paralysis will overcome and the likelihood of making one giant leap is slim. We are ecstatic to have made and celebrate this large stride as the only film material on the market made like this and will continue the journey where it makes the best sense.
  • 2 0
 @RideWrap: so it is not.
  • 3 0
@Daveproride: As described, simply whether you are able to throw it in the 'blue' bin would be dependent on your municipal recycling program.
  • 2 0
@Daveproride: more chance of it being properly recycled in Germany than elsewhere no doubt

Have you guys thought about doing ski and snowboard top sheet protection?
  • 2 0
We board *shaka* (and ski)! Some staff have tested it on our mountain here in Whistler. As an overall, from a protection perspective, the Lotus Pro film does its job well. From a customer view, it would be quite an expensive product compared to the cost of skis and is harder to install (manual trimming around edges).

Lotus Pro 10 is available in bulk - so boarders/skiers go nuts!
  • 2 1
Who supplies your protection film, Xpel? Is your Lotus Pro 10 product proprietary to RideWrap?
  • 2 0
Lotus Pro products are proprietary RideWrap films. In the world of ppf films our competitors are the likes of 3M, Eastman, Suntek, LLumar, Xpel, etc. and we are the first and only to create film made from recycled materials and the only producing a true 10mil product. Each business is unique, interestingly Xpel does not own a factory that makes the product they outsource it, while others such as Suntek rely on their parent company Eastman shared facilities.
