Rose Grant and Chloe Woodruff's Custom Pivot Bikes - Cairns XC World Champs 2017

Sep 5, 2017
by Cameron Mackenzie

With the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Cairns now upon us, the curtains are starting to lift on all the custom painted glory that we have come to expect from a World Champs event. Today has marked the first scheduled day of events here in Cairns and first on the block was full on day of XCO practice for both men and women from all age categories. Some riders have been careful to keep their worlds bikes under wraps, but for the eagle-eyed, there was still plenty to be found.

Pivot Cycles were one of the brands that made little secret of the fact that they were getting custom worlds bikes done for all their sponsored athletes leading into Cairns. However, on the ground, they have kept them under close guard. Today on course, Stans-Pivot Pro Team's Chloe Woodruff and Rose Grant's American showpieces were on full display, so we caught up with them this evening to get a closer look and understand the subtle differences between the two.

At first glance, you would be lead to believe the girls are on identical bikes. But upon closer investigation, they each run a different bike. Chloe is only 5'2" so has opted for Pivot's Mach 4 model, while Rose is an above average 5'8" and has chosen to run the Mach 429SL model.

Typically, elite level racers are very particular about their bike setups, but when questioned, both Chloe and Rose proved not to be like many, in fact, they were very laid back about their setups.

Explain to us a little about your bike setup and how you have setup your bikes for this course in Cairns?

bigquotesTo be honest, we haven't changed our setups much at all. For this race, I reached out to Chloe as she has raced the last few world cups here for advice on bike selection. We both had the choice of any bike within Pivot's lineup, whether it be hardtail of full suspension. Chloe suggested I run a full suspension due to the technical and rocky terrain here in Cairns. The Mach429SL is the same bike I have raced of most of 2017 so it's a bike I'm very comfortable on.Rose Grant

bigquotesBoth Rose and I are big believers in the "run what you brung" setup. Bike selection is the hardest decision we have to make, but beyond that, we don't adjust or change much. Yes, we might change to a heavier sidewall tire or add a few PSI here and there, but we aren't people to complain over a click too much rebound for example. If you know your setup and are comfortable with that, then that confidence in your setup is a bigger advantage I feel.Chloe Woodruff

Chloe runs the Mach 4 as this is Pivot's most suitable XC style 27.5" wheeled bike. She has played around a little bit with 29" options but felt the smaller wheels created a much more balanced bike when paired with the smaller frames. The speed trade off is next to none she feels and is as happy as can be with it. Her Mach 4 runs 100mm travel front and rear, as opposed to the stock 115mm setup. (XS frames are 100mm off the shelf though)

Rose runs the 429SL as this is Pivot's purebred race machine with 100mm of travel at both ends and rolling on 29" wheels. Being taller than most other women, Rose can ride a medium sized frame with no issue and prefers the 29er for roll over and handling vs a 27.5 wheeled option.

Both run Shimano XTR gearing paired with the FOX iRD electronic lockout system
bigquotes The iRD is great, but surprisingly here we both don't use it much, we just got on with the pedaling. We don't change much at all between Open and Trail as the bikes don't bob much at all under pedaling.

Chloe runs Stan's Valor Carbon wheelset, due to the fact the alloy Podium SRD wheel isn't available in 27.5"

Rose runs the new Podium SRD, which gives her a few small advantages over teammate Chloe. The Podium SRD rim has a slightly wider profile than the Valor found Chloe's bike. allowing Rose to run lower pressures and have a more square tire profile. Chloe opts for 18 PSI in the front and 19 PSI in the rear, while Rose runs 19PSI in the front and 21PSI Rear. Keep in mind though, Rose has a 6" and likely 10kgs on Chloe so tire pressure is a little subjective.

For Cairns, both have opted for the Maxxis Ikon in a 2.1" width with the EXO casing for a little more sidewall protection against the rocks

The additions of the dropper post to both bikes are a strong point of interest. An addition that is becoming a much more regular sight on XC bikes.
Both are running 120mm Fox Transfer posts to help with technical descents. Chloe mentioned that the dropper is something she has been running for several years now and is a small penalty in weight for the ability to move that seat out the way and be able to stomp the descents. Chloe had hers paired with a Wolftooth Light Action Lever as this is the easiest to operate after recent thumb surgery while Rose is running the stock Fox Transfer under-bar lever

So which is the better way to mount the shock?

 @chyu: both! Wink

With this color scheme FOX is kindly asking for a generous tax break and huge incentives...
  • 5 1
Yes. Tho they might have gone for a more disruptive color scheme: orange for red and baby for dark blue. I keep my head down and my movements irregular, as my compatriots are well-armed, especially the women. If I'm reading it correctly, Rose has a 6".
  • 2 2
@chyu: From a mechanical sense, it's better to run it like Chloe, less unsprung weight, so better suspension action. I'm guessing Rose just wants less clutter in the way when reaching for her bottle.
  • 3 0
@TucsonDon: the difference in unsprung weight won't be noticed by any human. The inertia of 30 grams out of 60000? Unless you are running heavy wheels or a Rohloff hub, unsprung weight makes no difference in MTB because parts are so light.
  • 5 0
Although the paint jobs are quite impressive, I personally find them to be a little much.
  • 4 0
@chyu: the XS doesnt have the frame clearance necessary to mount the shock like the medium.

Many of the parts are made overseas so they may not let it back in the country!

Do the team jerseys come with an American flag cape built in? Seems appropriate for these bikes.

@jdsusmc: I will say this frame in general doesnt have the looks. But pivot makes some seriously killer bikes. Just saying.

 NO CAPES!!!

Right the fork lowers are the ONLY thing wrong with this bikes
  • 5 7
When you are a sponsored FOX Elite rider you get orange forks....so you kinda have to stick to the contract, no matter what it looks like on your frame sponsor. I see the Orange and think awesome top tier racer.
  • 5 2
@fastandlow: Idea: Spray-tan a raw frame, then clear coat. Add orange Fox 32. A fitting tribute to current state of affairs.

Fecking minging. Like Donald-flavoured lipstick on a confederate pig.

I was once in Banff, AB and ordered a vodka and lemonade in (Jenny's I think about a decade ago?) a bar above a steak house and was given a gin and lemonade. My 18 yr old palate had yet to discover the wonder of gin and I vomited everywhere (it was happy hour). I feel like I've just made a similar mistake.

That is one Ugly paint job. I know its subjective,... so subjectively speaking, that is one Gaudy Paint Job.
  • 4 7
Ugly paint job on an ugly bike. All of their bikes look crap to me.
  • 9 4
I think the bikes are fantastic, purely as they demonstrate the engagement that Pivot has with its athletes and teams. Imagine getting a custom desk/chair/cubicle from your boss to celebrate a project you're working on?
  • 3 1
Company/athletes engagement I am 100% certain that was the goal with this project and free advertisement was not even considered as an objective.
  • 7 2
Im pretty sure I seen that paint job on a Super Cycle from Walmart. Do you recon they hired the elite team at Super Cycle to do the Art Work?
  • 8 1
 Canadian?
  • 3 1
Such nice details in bits of the frame (linkage, rear triangle, etc.), but the swoopy TT and downtube shapes are just hideous in all frame sizes - complete lack of balance and harmony to the rear triangle. What are the weights?
  • 3 1
Here we go. Time for the gaudy tastless bike week. Who has the nastiest paint job going? Im not talking about the quality of the work. Just what they look like. These set a good standard in the guady stakes with the ususal bland stars and stripes theme.
  • 7 2
These bikes are making America Great Again.
  • 5 1
Only mountain bikers can see passed how much an orange fork clashes with everything except an orange bike.
  • 4 1
 Orange is the new black.
  • 3 2
Nothing like getting past on the trail by an orange fork.
  • 3 0
 *Past.

"Chloe runs Stan's Valor Carbon wheelset, due to the fact the alloy Podium SRD wheel isn't available in 27.5"

Maybe also due to the fact that the podium SRD is carbon not alloy
  • 3 0
I am sure these bikes work brilliantly, but the colour scheme is a mess and that frame shape is not easy on the eye at all...
  • 1 0
The front triangle is unsightly regardless of paint scheme! Only way to get a small bottle in there is to mount it at the BB and reversing the shock mounting. Seriously, I would love to use a Pivot 429SL for XC racing but the swoopy tubes looking way to close to the Titus Rockstar Carbon 29er for me.
  • 1 0
Ok i just read all the comments and no one did not mention the fatcreations!?
I don't blame you guys. That's how much you know about the fatcreations! They painted so many Paty's frames which are world known, like Spitfire, Mooooovallous, Tweed... and so many other frames, my favorite is Spitfire, what they did it just piece of pure art.
I'm not doing any add for fatcreations at all, I was thinking to send my bike for paint to them, but it cost a lot of money and as a husband and a father I can't afford that, but it's my only wish.
The fatcreations are masterpiece of painting bike frames, I love every single paint they do and if you think it's easy job, than you are all wrong my dear fellow riders.
Check just one of Paty's painted frame at this link m.youtube.com/watch?v=eCHdmdM1qSM
Respect for all of ya.

"Rose has a 6" and likely 10kgs on Chloe..."

The "A" changes the meaning significantly.
  • 1 0
I actually dont really like the frame in general. I've never been a fan of swoopy tubes. The paint is nice though, fork clashes...but that orange 32 only really looks good on Batty's bike.
  • 1 0
Why are the rear shocks in opposite directions? Is there a benefit in a particular direction?
  • 1 0
Doesn't look like there is room on the XS frame for the lock out device to be run the same way as the medium frame.
  • 1 0
I'm guessing Chloe's XS can't accommodate a bottle anyways (no cage mounted), so it's mounted in "normal" position. Whereas Rose's bike is a regular Medium, and to access the bottle easily, the shock had to be turned so the bottle can clear the ICD unit.
  • 2 0
To increase the room to fit a large water bottle. No direct benefit besides more room to a large water bottle.
  • 3 1
Riders should wear Axl Rose American flag pants he was wearing in the 90's
  • 3 1
 Gaudy. Enough said.
  • 3 2
Gawdy paint job with orange forks, looks stupid!
  • 3 4
Orange forks are just fine, what is wrong is the terrible jingoist flag paint job.

(Any paint job based on any country's flag is just silly).
  • 4 7
The point of the paintjob was to be zany and cool, if it was about being subtle they would just have the flag next to their name like everybody else.

Why aren't more people dong this? I would LOVE to see a bike tricked out with the Brazilian flag, or the French. It's only Americans doing the "Frig Yeah MERICA!!!" thing, I would love to see other nations participating in being excited about their home nation. Imagine a iron man/Spanish flag crossover, that would be DOPE!!! The Brits do it a little, but I want to see more.

People, rep your flags! Love your country!
  • 5 1
 This your first rodeo, partner?
  • 1 1
i do have simpaty for my country, but have you ever seen the flag of it as you mentioned on your comment my friend? trust me, you would never want to see a paint job referring to that. Not even on your enemies' bikes. Black and grey bikes exist for a reason.
