There Won't Be a Trans-Provence in 2018

Nov 6, 2017
by Pinkbike Staff
Press Release

We the organisers are extremely grateful to have enjoyed the conditions necessary to run an ambitious project such as Trans-Provence for many years. There are so many people to thank - indeed literally everyone who has ever had anything to do with the running, promoting, reporting or financing of the event. You know who you are and your contribution will never be forgotten by us.

As much of a shock as this news may come to some people, it's important for us to point out the following: yes it's been fun, but Trans-Provence the event is nowhere near as important as the type of mountain biking practice which it has aimed to advocate & promote. MTB is bigger than any event or series and MTB is, we think, in a pretty good place these days.

So be good to each other, ride your bikes lots, and hopefully see you for a ride or a beer somewhere in the future.

Cheers for now,

Ash, Melissa, Tegan & Kieran

Unique and interesting development. Actually quite happy to see this sort of decision being made. If the event is viable, it will return, and by then it will probably be all new and exciting (or at least people will have forgotten about the routes they took Smile

Trans-Provence was so cool and unique. I believe it did light up a certain dream among some riders to some day participate in an event like this. Thanks for everything, I hope one day I get the opportunity!

 Classy exit!

I think this would make a great transition to Trans Provence Tours, highlighting unique and tremendous trails that few of us would find without your help. Focus on 3-7 day tours using a mix of infrastructure (read: lifts / gondola's), pedaling and maybe a shuttle or two thrown in.

I'd love to simply ride some of your routes with a couple of friends, riding from village to village or hut to hut. Happy to beta test it for you as well Wink .

Yep, something more doable for mere mortals would be immensely popular. I'd love to ride that stuff, particularly without a stopwatch so the good bits could be sessioned.

@mrtoodles: Exactly. Just for fun rides heavy on adventure, powdirt and memory making!

I count myself lucky enough to have rode in it last year - (competed is to strong a word), Ash & Melissa created an event that was truly brilliant, with a great sense of camaraderie who ever you were and what ever you background or Nationality, you were there to ride your bike the best you could. Thanks Ash, Melissa and all the TP staff that made it one of the best things I’ve ever had the pleasure to do. Good luck with the future- if you come up with another event, well I’m in!

Such a sick event! Too bad they're not having it next year :0 At least theres still other similar events to keep track of like the Andes Pacifico.

If I'm not mistaken, the event was born from their guiding business there? I also seem to recall they ran trans-provence tours there, not just the race. Does this mean they will be no longer be doing guided tours there? Or that they've found another cool place to explore and guide in, and will run a race somewhere else? Regardless, riding in Provence is still on my bucket list... doing some epic rides there will still be cool...

i thought he got slapped by the french for operating/guiding illegally.....

It's a big event run by a small crew. Ash turned out to be a mortal like the rest of us and needs time with the family and normal life. Shame it won't happen this year but better to take a break and come back stonger, hopefully. We need more events like this.

Bummer. I ´ve been lucky and had a chance to "race" it once (racing isn't quite the goal on such event). It wasn't known yet as it was only the second edition. Since the day we reached Monaco, I had one goal : enter that event again. That's the best stuff I did on a mountain bike for sure. I hope it will come back. Congrats to all organizers.

Damn, was going to try and do the next one. Applied a few times but only got on reserve list. Hope you it comes back. Did the Trans Savoie previously and folk said TP was better organised and that the food was much better. Hope it comes back.

Bummer to hear that it's not happening in 2018, but it seems like a fair reason to me. Hopefully it will be back, I always enjoy seeing events like this.

One of the best events I've ever done in my life, cheers, Ash and Melissa, enjoy the time!

Racing blind is true enduro. Bummed I didn't get to do this one. My friends who did definitely loved it.

I did this event...a while ago. I still think about the trails we rode back then, I still want to go back and ride some of them again, although maybe not the one with the lung busting climb within 400m of the finish on day 3. I may be older, maybe not much wiser, but racing down trails "blind" is still exhilarating and a great skill leveler.
Thank you Ash, Melissa, Tegan & Kieran, it was great!

So sad I didn't make it for 2017...but honest opinion, can't mind that!
  • 1 1
Maybe the aren't allowed to run it anymore because they don't clear their tape and signs up.
  • 1 0
They ran a clean up crew behind the race, on a couple of days they caught the last riders up. I was a tight well organised ship.
  • 1 0
They also cancelled a race stage (two years running) as the local mayor was not happy, and insisted that we walk our bikes in certain areas so as to not infringe on the local laws surrounding national parks, every thing was done to insure compliance and respect for the locations and communities we were racing through. Lots of time and effort seemed to have gone into building relationships with the local people. Not cleaning up was not the ethos, that would kinda go against the principles of the TP. Sorry to be a pedant but I wanted to say it as I saw it when there.

@tellend Who told you that? Believe me, the reasons to stop operating this event are nothing to do with racing authorisations. It's a shame that you're too cynical to take the message in the video at face value.
  • 1 0
@LeRosbifSospellois: Hi I think you miss understood me, we rode the stage, but didn’t race it, I was informed by the guys running the stages it was at the request of the local mayor. Everyone was cool, if anything my time for that stage was my best (just over 1second) as our transponders has to be clocked in and out so as not to mess up the other stage timings ????

 @tellend
Think you're thinking of the Trans Savoie mate. We're still collecting bits of crap that're lying around Les Arcs cos it wasn't tidied up properly. Trans Provence had a different (and much much better IMHO) organiser and did everything properly and by the book.

@LeRosbifSospellois: apologies, missed the tag at the start of your comment. Thought you were commenting on my last comment. Thanks B.B. for pointing it out. Wink

My bucket list is one item shorter until it comes back...

I wonder if this has anything to do with Mavic being down 8% in sales???
